London Bridge damaged by car accident - Today's News-Herald

Lake Havasu City Traffic Engineer Mark Clark said maintenance workers will be on scene today creating a temporary barrier where about three rows of granite baluster were damaged when the driver of a 2001 Ford F-150 lost control of his truck... Police said pieces of the historic bridge fell into the water but the driver, 33-year-old Jose Lopez, was not injured. The bridge was reduced to one lane Friday night as officers directed traffic while Lopez’s truck was towed away. Clark said he expects one eastbound lane to be coned off as well as the sidewalk of that bridge’s side until a temporary barrier is created. Police said they were unsure as to why Lopez lost control although weather may have played a factor as roads were slick Friday night from rainfall. Kirk Cesena with the Lake Havasu City Police Department used the accident as a reminder to drivers to use caution when the roads are wet. Clark said this is the third time the London Bridge, which was purchased by Lake Havasu City Founder Robert McCulloch in 1968 from the City of London in an auction, has been damaged by a vehicle accident. The bridge cost $2. 4 million and McCulloch spent another $7 million transporting the pieces from London to Havasu. Source: www.havasunews.com
