Man flown to hospital after crash - Standard Speaker

One man was extricated from a vehicle and flown to a regional trauma center following a two-vehicle crash in Butler Township on Wednesday afternoon, police said. Police said a man who was driving a green Subaru that was headed east on Butler Drive near Freedom Road turned into the path of an eastbound Ford pickup truck around 5:30 p. m. The crash prompted emergency personnel to shut down part of Butler Drive. Emergency responders cut off the Subaru’s roof to remove the driver. He was taken to the parking lot of a nearby fire company and flown to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, police said. The man who was driving the pickup truck was not injured, police said. Firefighters from the Freeland and Valley Regional departments responded, along with the Sugarloaf and Freeland Northside Community ambulances. Part of the road was closed for at least an hour as emergency responders worked to clear wreckage from the roadway. When an officer asked about the scent of marijuana emanating from a vehicle he stopped for speeding Tuesday afternoon, the Oakland driver conceded he might have had a joint somewhere in the car. This was on Highway 101 in Cloverdale, right outside of Mendocino County where one estimate suggests one-third of the county's economy is marijuana cultivation. A subsequent search of the Subaru Legacy yielded 225 pounds of marijuana in vacuum-sealed bags. No explanation was coming: the driver, identified as 31-year-old Oakland resident Brett Lee Wilson, invoked his right to silence, the CHP said. Truck collision closes Marsh Road. Marsh Road was closed in both directions at midnight Monday after a pickup crashed through a fence and overturned into an adjacent channel, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash near the intersection of Fair Oaks Avenue was reported around 11:53 p. m. , said CHP Officer Art Montiel. Officers found driver Antonio Rosales Paniagua, 41, of East Palo Alto, with minor injuries. Marsh Road was reopened after Paniagua's 1999 Chevrolet Silverado was removed from the channel and barricades were set up, according to Atherton Public Works Director Steve Tyler. Venturing back into the pickup truck marketplace for the first time since the Brat, Subaru unveils this all wheel drive, supercharged concept - The ST-X. (Subaru Truck X-perimental)

Armed with a four cylinder 2.5-liter SOHC 4-cylinder boxer engine with Eaton supercharger and Subaru B4 intercooler, the ST-X produces a powerful 230 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm and 210 lbs.-ft. of torque @ 4,000 rpm.

The eye opening ST-X drivetrain doesn't just stop at the engine. It also has full-time All-Wheel Drive, a dual-range 5-speed transmission and 8.5 inches of ground clearance give it true off-road capability.

A long-travel, heavy-duty four-wheel independent suspension provides a smooth on-road ride while allowing the ST-X to step over rough off-road terrain. The 225/55 R17 Yokohama AVS S/T tires mounted on 17" x 7" Enkei alloy wheels add to the off-road capability and give the ST-X a rugged, sporty look, as do the roof-mounted PIAA driving lights. The ST-X should have debuted at SEMA.

In the cabin there is room enough to seat four adults. The truck sports a trick folding rear panel in the cab allowing the 55.5 inch bed to be extended forward by an additional 20.5 inches for those trips to Home Depot. The rear window of the cab rolls down into the rear bed panel for the folding to take place. A rear bed extender can also be added when the tailgate is down.
The console and armrest trim, painted with a special dipped process, features an "aboriginal pattern" finish, while satin-chrome-look trim adorns the combination gauge pack and other items.

The gauge pack also features "dark screen" technology -- the dials don? become visible until the vehicle is started. A Momo steering wheel provides a sporty touch one might find in a sports car and it, of course, includes an air bag.

The ST-X Team worked with McIntosh Audio, recognized for its high-end home system components. The ST-X system includes an AM/FM head unit with CD player, three amps, 650 watts of total system power and seven McIntosh speakers. The sound system includes dual VU meters which, while functional, serve no real purpose beyond their visual interest. After conducting informal testing with a teenage consumer clinic, the "older members" on the ST-X team opted to include the meters. Actually, the "clinic" comprised several teenagers who said "Ooh, cool" when they saw the meters in a McIntosh Audio catalog. Those "older" team members, meanwhile, felt that for some, the meters might rekindle fond memories of late 1960s-vintage hi-fi equipment.

This four door pickup is specifically designed to gauge consumer reaction for possible future production. The ST-X could appeal to consumers -- especially younger car and truck shoppers -- who want the versatility of a four-door pickup truck, but would prefer the driving dynamics of a car.

Consider the platypus. Being semi-aquatic, this bizarre mammal looks like a cross between a beaver and a duck. But thanks to its quirky features, it's agile on land, is a fair swimmer and is adept at rooting for food on stream bottoms.

So what's that National Geographic sound bite got to do with the Subaru Baja? Well, the somewhat visually similar Subaru was also designed to adapt to changing needs, albeit ones dictated by its owner, not its survivability. Thanks to its unorthodox architecture, the Baja promised the nimble nature and passenger comfort of a midsize sedan along with the hauling capability of a small pickup truck.

Alas, just like many of Mother Nature's past experiments, the Subaru Baja didn't quite take. The car's odd styling turned off a lot of potential buyers, as did the fact that there just weren't that many people who desired a car-based pickup. Chevy El Camino enthusiasts excepted, of course. Production ended for the Baja after just four years on the market.

Most Recent Subaru Baja

Based on the Legacy/Outback platform, the Subaru Baja was produced from 2003-'06. In terms of its exterior design, calling the Baja "distinctive" would be the nice thing to say. We're certain that the heavy cladding along the lower body was supposed to look rugged, but instead it seemed as if a Pontiac stylist from the late '80s had infiltrated Subaru's design studio.

Rather than a sedan's trunk or a wagon's enclosed cargo area, the Baja featured a small, open cargo box like a pickup truck. To improve versatility, Subaru fitted a "Switchback," otherwise known as a midgate. The midgate allowed the front wall of the bed and the rear seatback to fold down and into the passenger area. This increased bed length from 41 to 60 inches. The rear window was fixed in place, however, which placed limitations on the size and shape of items that would fit.

The Subaru Baja was initially available in standard and Sport trims. The standard Baja came with air-conditioning, leather seating, full power accessories, a CD player, 16-inch alloy wheels and a power sunroof. The Sport was more of a base trim, as it substituted cloth upholstery for the leather and had a manual, not power, driver seat. Options included a bed extender, a bed-mounted bike rack and a premium sound system with a six-CD changer. The cabin design was essentially the same as the Legacy's, which meant high-quality materials, a user-friendly control layout and comfortable seats.

Power was provided by a 2.5-liter flat-4 that made a respectable 165 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, with a four-speed automatic optional. Although the 2.5 had decent output, there's only so much thrust it could furnish while saddled with nearly 3,700 pounds of all-wheel-drive Subie. Our testing netted a 0-60 time of 9.9 seconds (with the manual gearbox) -- about equal to a compact V6 pickup of the day.

The following year, the Baja Turbo debuted. Fitted with a turbocharged version of the 2.5, it sported 210 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. The Baja Turbo was more than 2 seconds quicker to 60 mph and a lot more fun to drive. An Edmunds road test quote sums it up nicely: "It's not quite a performance car, but it's a lot more fun to drive than most other pickups or SUVs."

In theory, the Subaru Baja seemed to make perfect sense, offering the best attributes of a family sedan with the utility of a compact pickup. But it fell a bit short in a few areas. Passenger capacity was limited to just four rather than the regular Legacy's five. And towing capacity was rated at just 2,000 pounds with the automatic and 2,400 pounds with the manual.

Still, with its all-wheel drive, generous ground clearance and versatile cargo bed, a used Subaru Baja could be the ideal choice for outdoor sports enthusiasts involved with mountain biking, kayaking and camping. Add in Subaru's solid reputation for reliability, the Baja's easy-to-handle size and superior fuel economy (compared to a V6 pickup truck) and this odd duck of a car may make more sense than most people initially thought.
