Ed Dougherty, Salem concert promoter, dies at 77 - Statesman Journal

Ed Dougherty was teaching math at Waldo Middle School in the early 1960s when he heard students complaining that there was nothing to do in Salem on the weekends. He did something about it, organizing a dance with a live band at the Knights of Columbus Hall in 1962. The hall held 250 teens, Dougherty charged 25 cents admission, and 500 showed up. "He cared about kids," longtime friend Jim Jones said Wednesday. Dougherty, longtime concert promoter who brought the likes of Johnny Cash and Sonny & , Paul Revere & the Raiders, Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night, the Doors and Pink Floyd. Dougherty later ventured out to promote events for the Oregon State Fair and other West Coast venues, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Elvis and the Beach Boys. In retirement, Dougherty was best known for his massive collection of music memorabilia. 11, 1965, that brought the famous rock band Paul Revere & the Raiders to Salem Armory for the first time. Dougherty was reminiscing about the life and career of Paul Revere, organist and ringleader for the band, who had just died. "We both kind of got started together," Dougherty said. Dougherty had to downsize his collection in 2014, when he and his wife moved to the Capital Manor retirement community because of her health problems. Source: www.statesmanjournal.com
