Religion is disappearing. That's great for politics. - Politico

Before the rise of the religious right in the 1980s, most politicians kept their faith to themselves. In 1945, for example, President Harry Truman wrote: “I’m not very much impressed with men who publicly parade their religious beliefs. ” After his election in 1953 President Dwight D. Eisenhower joined a Presbyterian church, but when he heard the minister was publicly boasting about his new member the general commanded, “You go and tell that goddam minister that if he gives out... Gerald Ford called his religiosity “very personal” and wrote, “I am most reluctant to speak or write about it publicly. This all changed in the 1980s, when evangelical pastor Jerry Falwell and his Moral Majority (famously characterized as “neither”) convinced Christian politicians that evangelizing for the Lord included knocking on doors within the beltway. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s Christian sects and faith-based organizations such as Ralph Reed’s Christian Coalition of America and James Dobson’s Focus on the Family used rallies and donor support to convince politicians and candidates that if... Pouring money and love into a car: The $500000 ute comes out at Summernats - The Canberra Times

Mick Lear reckons he has spent $500,000 on his pristine 1953 Ford Mainline ute and is the first to admit he will never get that money back. "You do it for the pleasure it gives you," the Brisbane-based transport company owner said. The 44-year-old said that while the classic "single spinner" ute had been fitted with a side-valve Ford V8 when it was delivered to its first owner, the Gympie Post Master, in 1953, a lot had changed since then. I wanted something I could drive to church on Sundays (part of the original brief for the first Australian Ford ute) and use at shows and for display. "We estimate the power at between 780 and 850 horsepower, it has a 671 blower, a C4 gearbox and a nine-inch Ford diff. The back tyres are monsters, 15-inch by 20-inch donuts designed to plant the power firmly to the road. "It doesn't matter, they are worth it. ". George Grivas's golf cart-based "woody" pickup represented the other end of the spectrum in the cars picked to contest the "supreme entrant" competition at Summernats on Sunday. The 40-year-old construction worker from St Mary's has been working on the Suzuki-powered machine for more than a year. "George is absolutely obsessed with cars," his wife, Josephine Grivas, said. The couple's children, Kosta aged two-and-a-half and Ria, 1, love the diminutive machine that combines Ford styling with a Chevy badge. Source: www.canberratimes.com.au

Helicopters Keep Piasecki Name Flying Through Time - Mainline Today

In his garage, he unfolds the rotor blades, stows his clubs in the cockpit of his helicopter, and takes off. Dressed in a pinstripe suit, a homburg and a bow tie, Frank Piasecki is the star of this ingeniously concocted 1943 newsreel segment, dubbed “An Air Flivver in Every Garage. ” As recounted in Jay Spenser’s 1998 book, Whirlybirds , Piasecki’s single-seat, single-rotor helicopter became the nation’s second such machine to actually fly as advertised. A pioneer in the vertical-aviation industry, he remained chief executive of Piasecki Aircraft Corporation along the Delaware River in Essington until his death in 2008 at 88. Today, PiAC is run by two of five Piasecki sons. His widow, Vivian Weyerhaeuser Piasecki, turned 84 in October. Thanks to Vivian’s husband and others with his interests, the Delaware Valley has been a cradle of rotary-wing development, and it’s certainly no coincidence that the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center is in West Chester, about 20 miles... “Pi,” as he was known, earned 24 patents, perfected the first dynamically balanced rotor and developed the first practical tandem-rotor helicopter. He also received the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. “I never heard him reflecting on past accomplishments,” says. Source: www.mainlinetoday.com
  • 1953 Ford Mainline | Hagerty – Classic Car Price Guide

Ford introduced all-new models for 1952, beating rival Chevrolet to the punch by a full year. The Mainline became FoMoCo’s entry-level model, and it featured a more modern style than the basic Deluxe it replaced. Wraparound windshield, curved rear glass, a modified grille, and more ornamentation to break up the earlier “Shoebox” Ford’s slab sides gave the new Mainline a fresh look.

The Mainline came standard with an overhead-valve six-cylinder that displaced 215 cid and made 101 hp. A 239-cid L-head engine was optional, and it used a two-barrel carburetor to create 110 hp. A three-speed manual transmission was standard, while overdrive and Ford-O-Matic were optional with either motor. Body styles included a business coupe, Tudor and Fordor sedans, and a two-door Ranch station wagon. The base price for a Tudor sedan in 1952 was $1,629.

The 1953 Ford Mainline was largely the same as the previous year, with a slightly simpler grille and different side brightwork. Body choices and prices were essentially the same, as were powertrain choices. Power steering became a welcome option this model year.

The 1954 model received a new suspension setup and a new engine tunes. The standard six-cylinder now produced 115 hp, while the optional V-8 now had 130 hp on tap. New convenience options included power brakes, windows, and front seat.

The 1955 Ford Mainline was vastly different from the 1954 model. The grille was markedly new, as it no longer sported a spinner front. A plunging trim piece ran from the A-pillar to the rear of the car. The 1956 Mainline’s major development was the introduction of a 12-volt electrical system. The car also received more of the Thunderbird’s styling and air conditioning became optional, and the business coupe was removed from the lineup. The optional V-8 became the 173-hp, 272-cid unit, though the Ranch wagon’s V-8 choice was the 292-cid, 200-hp engine that was standard in the Thunderbird.

The Ford Mainline was very popular, with more than one million making it to the road. Enthusiasts usually opt for the 1956 models due to their 12-volt systems and the power options those systems can support. Earlier cars are interesting and affordable as well, and any Mainline is relatively easy to maintain assuming rust and rot are kept in check. All in all, the car is an affordable way to experience a mainstream 1950s American car.
