Car enthusiasts make run from Detroit to New York - Detroit Free Press

Seventy custom and exotic vehicles rolled out early this morning on the MotorCity Gumball Rally , a three-day odyssey that would take them from downtown Detroit to Manhattan via city streets and highways -- with stops at high-end hotels,... "It's about the excitement of feeling the open road, feeling the car, making things happen," said Arun Arora, 42, of Toronto, who is driving an orange McLaren MP12-4C. "You have a good time, meet a lot of new folks on the road -- and travel to new cities. Waseem Qureshi, the president of the Motor City Gumball club, said he organized the first rally four years ago. Back then, it was smaller, only 40 cars, and the drivers went from Detroit to Traverse City. The next year, they went to Indianapolis with 60 cars, and last year, to Chicago with 100 vehicles. This year, Qureshi said, he scaled back the number of cars, but increased the distance they traveled. He was sitting in a 2003 Infiniti G35, which was parked next to a 1939 Ford pickup truck and 2007 Ferrari F430. For fun, some of the participants came dressed up in masks and costumes.
