If you own a Diablo 6.0 or 2002/2003 Murcielago you are probably aware of the ignition coil dilemma. These cars were the first Lamborghinis to use individual ignition coils after spark plug wires but before the use of Audi ignition coils. Unfortunately, the Magneti Marelli ("MM") ignition coils Lamborghini uses for these years are not without fault, they use small o-ring seals compressed by a metal clamp on the top of the coil, which allow water to enter the spark plug valleys which leads to corrosion of the spark plugs and ignition coils. The corrosion causes a weak spark, RPM hunting, engine misfire and can damage the catalytic converters. To top it off, one set of stock coil packs is a scant $3,000.00 and Lamborghini only sells them in complete sets. Unlike many other parts found on the Diablo and Murcielago, the ignition coils are not cross-referenced with any other car.
If your Diablo 6.0 or Murcielago is doing the following, it likely needs new ignition coils:Hunting RPMStalling while at idleCatalytic Converter overheat light coming onRaw fuel smellCar not as fast as it used to be
Here's the low down on the Reid Performance (White Out) ignition coil: 1. 3 pin coilpack body to fit Lamborghini wiring harness;2. Spark plug boot to match the MM coilpack height; and3. Upper rubber seal to properly keep water out of the spark plug valley.
The stock Magneti Marelli coilpack:1. $3,000.00 for a set of 12;2. Allows water to leak into the spark plug valley;3. Prone to corrosion from allowing water to leak into the spark plug valley;4. Known to physically fall apart from corrosion; 5. Requires heavy grease to help keep moisture out of spark plug valley, which causes a mess; and6. Not all dealers keep them on hand, which means you wait for the parts to ship from Italy.
Reid Performance vs. Magneti Marelli:1. RP has a larger ignitor than MM;2. RP utilizes a fitted, rigid rubber seal around the top spark plug...
