City officials gathered at the Green Avenue Farmers Market in downtown to kick off Celebrate Killeen with food trucks, craft vendors, kiddie train rides and live music. The event also featured several local health care providers who provide the community with free information. Brett Williams, community services director, said the city has held its Thursday night kickoff event for the past five years through a partnership with Baylor Scott & White. “The committee wanted to do something to reach out and benefit the downtown community,” he said. Amber Atkins and her niece, Kionny McGowan, 8, said they live in the neighborhood and saw the event going on and decided to “check it out. Kionny said she was excited to put her climbing skills to the test on the rock wall. Killeen Mayor Scott Cosper kicked off the event by presenting Williams with a proclamation about the festival. “The Celebrate Killeen Festival is an annual event that brings together thousands of people for fun activities and exciting entertainment in celebration of our great city,” Cosper said.
