Bev’s Home Cookin’ restaurant operated at a site between East Winnebago Street and East Washington Avenue for 30 years, after spending its first four years on Fair Oaks Avenue. It closed in 2000 and started up in Marshall, called Bev’s on Main. The Marshall location closed in 2001. In this photo from 1999, owner Jason Dunn stands with his parents, Harv and Bev Philumalee, in the East Side diner. The Ivy Inn, 2355 University Ave. The inn was built in 1957 and closed in 2003. This photo shows the Wisconsin National Secretaries Association annual spring meeting held at the Ivy Inn. The photo of the group's officers ran in the State Journal on May 19, 1960. Four brothers opened Piper's Garden Cafeteria in 1923 at the corner of Webster and East Mifflin streets in an old church building. The restaurant, 120 East Mifflin St. , was known for having a good selection of German food and a courtyard of lovely seasonal flowers. This picture was taken on Mother's Day in 1945. Lyle Poole ran the popular Cuba Club restaurant spotlighted in our earlier slideshow, but some readers thought we should also mention Poole's Northgate, 1291 N.
