This coming weekend (April 24-26) is an informal kickoff for the Northern California season of automania, that time of year when almost every week over the next several months will see car races, concours d’elegance, rallies, drag racing, and the... This year is the 25 anniversary of the popular road rally created by the late Martin Swig, the ultimate car guy – he was an auto dealer, a collector of refined taste (he did love Italian cars), a fixture at many of the region’s big car events... It’s an homage to the famed Mille Miglia of Italy, a race that ran from 1927 to 1957 and featured some of the all-time great race drivers hurtling through small towns at more than 100 miles an hour, with fans shouting and waving as the cars roared... In California, it’s a bit more subdued, but the cars are just as colorful. (To get an idea of the California Mille, and to view more photos of the cars, see this piece I wrote about the event last year. ) On Sunday afternoon (April 26), from 12 p. m. to 4 p. m. , you can see the 67 cars that will be entered in this year’s rally, which starts early Monday morning.
