Culinary Arts Camp will whip up tons of fun in the kitchen - Gulf Coast News Today

Camp creators Jessica Jones and Jonathan Langston have an array of goals for the camp, and for the first- through 12th-grade campers. They said among those goals are to introduce inspiration and confidence into the art of food preparation. Langston, organizer and instructing chef, said that letting children into the kitchen helps each individual and family unit. “Teaching children to cook from basic ingredients helps them to develop a mature palate and they are much more likely to eat what they make,” he said. “This ultimately gives them confidence in the kitchen which can be nurtured into quality family time preparing meals together. The week will begin with Dale and Glenn Beard, owners of The Meat Mart at Orange Beach, as they teach students how to cut, marinate and dehydrate their famous jerky. They will help cut the meat, then each child will marinate it in Dale’s Seasoning and dehydrate it for two to three hours. “She grew up in our butcher shop and cut her teeth on jerky. “Children love to learn, they love to eat, but they don’t always eat what’s best for them. Glenn has 38 years’ experience in the meat industry and has owned his own butcher shop since 2004. “It is a forgotten art – most meat is cut in factories, shipped to stores.
