JERSEY CITY -- More charges have been filed against a Secaucus man who police say stood in the road and punched cars after a driving rampage that sent at least seven people to the hospital. He first appeared on July 8. Around 6 p. m. that day McDermott drove a Ford F350 pickup truck on the Paterson Plank Road overpass of Route 3 where he struck a 2003 BMW driven by a North Bergen resident, Secaucus police said. He struck the BMW repeatedly and eventually pushed it more than 800 feet east of Paterson Plank Road where the BMW slammed into the rear of a 2001 Kia Sephia, driven by a Jersey City resident and also occupied by Union City resident, police said. After striking one of the vehicles in North Bergen at Paterson Plank Road and Tonnelle Avenue, McDermott ran over the concrete divider and struck the other driver, who had gotten out of his vehicle, injuring him, the criminal complaint says. Police arrested McDermott on First Street where they found him standing in the middle of the road, screaming profanities and punching vehicles as they passed, police said. McDermott faces charges including disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, driving while suspended for driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and multiple counts of assault by auto, police said.
