RCMP investigate rash of car thefts - Alaska Highway News

Dawson Creek RCMP don’t have an explanation for a recent rash of car thefts in the city, but are warning residents to lock up their vehicles. Polices have reported 11 stolen vehicles so far this month. In December 2014, the theft of a Ford F350 from Grande Prairie led police to a chop shop located on a rural property on 217 Road. Darcy Beckman, a Dawson Creek Resident was charged with and plead guilty to crimes related to that case. But even though police raided the shop, Reinink said it’s easy for shops to relocate. In the course of their investigation into recent car thefts, RCMP located a vehicle stolen from the Dawson Creek area in Edmonton last week. “It’s likely they had gone on a crime spree, then come up here and stole other vehicles to go back down,” Reinink said. Reinink said there seems to be no rhyme or reason to when car thefts spike, noting no difference between the summer and winter months. Instead, he believes most vehicle thefts are crimes of opportunity. At about 3:30 a. m. on July 14, a Dawson Creek resident alerted police to car thefts occurring in the neighbourhood of 11th Street and 121st Avenue. “What they do is walk down the street and check every vehicle as they go,” Reinink said.
