Bridge the Gap project on track despite 'electrification' pause - LoughboroughEcho.net

THE Bridge The Gap project to link The Great Central Railway (GCR) line at Nottingham with Loughborough could be set for a delay and cost more, but the Railway says it is still on track - despite a recent government announcement. To build 100 metres of Victorian track to reunite the Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire parts of the GCR, a new bridge is required to take the GCR line over the Mainline. That was due to be installed during the work that was set to take place when the Midland Mainline was electrified. A GCR statement says: “The decision regarding electrification will mean the timescale to install the new bridge will change. “However, at a recent meeting Network Rail and the Great Central re-iterated their joint commitment to complete the work. “£920,000 has been raised towards the building of the bridge after the GCR launched a nationwide appeal in 2013. “The money has been donated by railway enthusiasts around the world and by many others in the local community. Bill Ford, the managing director of the GCR said, “Naturally, both the GCR and our partners at Nottingham on the other side of the ‘gap’ are disappointed the construction of the bridge will slip back.
