It’s turned out to be more reliable, capable, and useful than I ever thought it would be. I had been looking for a ’74-’75 Thriftside J-truck with a V-8 and a T-18 manual transmission on and off for a couple years. After a quick call to confirm it wasn’t a total rust bucket, I hitched up my trailer, grabbed some cash, and hit the road knowing good and well this truck was coming home with me. The previous owner had hoped to restore the truck. I once overheard a woman comment that she liked the tattered paint and red Moab mud plastered on my yellow truck. Her significant other harshly responded by telling her it was fake and only painted on to look like that. It took everything I had to not laugh out loud—I haven’t even washed this truck since I’ve owned it. My J-2000 came with an AMC 360 V-8, a T-18 manual transmission with a 6. 32:1 First gear, a Dana 20 transfer case, a flanged Dana 44 rear axle,... Originally, I had intended to install 40-inch tires with about 4 inches of lift, but it was going to require more fender trimming than I wanted to make, so I settled on 37-inch Goodyear MT/Rs.
