“A lot of times in college, I could just out-athleticize people, if that is even a term. But when you’re dealing with people in your position who are 6-2, 6-3, who can jump just as high if not higher than you, you kind of create a little disadvantage for yourself. And it led to Welch’s release Wednesday from the Chicago Sky, which had selected her in the second round of the WNBA draft with the 22nd overall pick. Now, the former Goose Creek High School star aims to continue her playing career overseas, after a summer of giving back to the communities which supported her during a storied career with the Gamecocks, which ended this past season in the... “I think it just allows me to kind of branch off at the moment and kind of focus on other things, and then get myself ready to go overseas. Welch said her agent is currently examining her prospects of playing outside the United States, and she came out of Chicago with a recommendation from Sky head coach Pokey Chatman, who once coached a Russian team in the women’s European league. “If somebody’s going to be willing to put me on their team — who am I to pass that opportunity up. ” Welch said.
