Buick Roadmaster Wagon: A Coming Collectible? - Wall Street Journal (blog)

Station wagons have been on the automotive endangered-species list for some time, along with manual transmissions and hand-cranked windows. And the really large ones that dominated the roads from the 1960s through the 1980s haven’t been on the new-car market for nearly two decades. I have great affection for wagons, and while the handful available today from Audi, BMW, Cadillac and a few others are nice, they lack the carrying capacity of older full-size models. You can find big wagons on the used market, but many are at least 40 years old. Some are now fetching collector-car prices and, frankly, you may not feel comfortable taking a long family road trip in a quirky antique. But if you are determined to avoid the SUV and crossover crowds, you might consider a Buick Roadmaster wagon from the early to mid-1990s (Chevrolet made one, too). Sure, the styling is dated and that rear overhang — the space from the rear wheels to the bumper – is outrageous by today’s car-design standards. Cars like this also have serious cargo space — more than all but the biggest modern SUVs and crossovers. Prices on the used market are typically under $5,000 even for very nice examples. I love my 1996 Buick Roadmaster wagon. Parts are cheap and it lasts and lasts. Source: blogs.wsj.com
