Famous, strange and ghost sightings on Ottawa County roads - Grand Haven Tribune

Such is the case of a new Lincoln Continental that once stopped at a Grand Haven gas station to fuel up in 1958. The driver was rock’n’roll legend Buddy Holly. On July 6, 1958, Buddy Holly and The Crickets were headliners to perform a concert at the Ponoma Dance Pavilion in Fruitport. On the way to the show, Holly made a brief stop that is lost to time. According to research compiled by Terry R. Shaw, the singer drove his brand-new, pale-blue Continental to the concert and, while en route to the event, briefly stopped for gasoline in Grand Haven. Born Charles Hardin Holley in 1936, Holly was a singer-songwriter and a pioneer of rock’n’roll. Soon after the summer show in Fruitport, The Crickets and Buddy Holly went their separate ways. “The white front bumper is the only original color on the car,” Gerber, the owner of the 1991 Cadillac Seville STS, said a few years ago. Harvey Rademaker, owner of Rademaker Auto Repair in Grand Haven, confirmed Gerber had brought his Crayola Caddy there for touch-ups. “I told Harvey to choose the colors,” Gerber said.
