WEST SPRINGFIELD – Police arrested a Westfield man on his eighth drunk driving charge just hours after the clock struck midnight on his 51st birthday. In addition to the felony drunk driving charge, which carries a maximum prison term of five years and a $25,000 fine, Wanat is charged with operating an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle, and driving without a license. According to court documents, an officer saw a vehicle speed by him on Circuit Avenue at around 2:30 a. m. on Thursday, Aug. The police report states the driver slammed on the brakes, turned around, and the officer pulled him over. Wanat reportedly told the officer, in slurred speech and with the strong odor of alcohol on his breath, that he had a few White Russians to celebrate his birthday. Then the officer asked Wanat provide his date of birth, and he was allegedly off by a decade on his first try. Asked to touch the tip of the officer's pen with his right index finger, he used his left, and twice failed to stand on one leg with his arms raised, the police report states.
