General Motors Finds Resourceful Use for Old Volt Batteries - Automobile

“Even after the battery has reached the end of its useful life in a Chevrolet Volt , up to 80 percent of its storage capacity remains,” said Pablo Valencia, senior manager, Battery Life Cycle Management. To harness these not-quite-dead batteries, GM re-purposed the packs for use on their Milford Proving Ground campus, where five batteries provide power for the IT administration building, allowing the center to achieve net-zero energy status. The batteries allow for storage of power even when it is not needed, so in the event of a campus-wide power outage, the batteries can provide power to the building for up to four hours.
