BATON ROUGE – The loss of a senior starting safety like Jalen Mills might cripple a normal team, but not DBU. Mills, who may miss the No. 14 Tigers’ first two games this season with an ankle injury, has been replaced in the lineup for now by junior Rickey Jefferson, who likely would have been starting at other schools last year. Jefferson has played 20 games with one start in two seasons and tied for the team lead with two interceptions last year. Another member of Defensive Back University who can soften the blow of Mills’ injury is Dwayne Thomas, a junior from New Orleans who can play cornerback and safety and thrived in the Tigers’ extra defensive back alignments last season before a... Thomas made 24 tackles with 2. 5 for losses, including 1. 5 sacks, while also intercepting a pass and forcing a fumble in his short season. Just after Thomas appeared to be recovering well from his knee injury and surgery in spring drills, he was arrested on charges of unlawful entry of a dwelling and simple burglary last June and suspended from the team.
