BATON ROUGE – The loss of a senior starting safety like Jalen Mills might cripple a normal team, but not DBU. Mills, who may miss the No. 14 Tigers’ first two games this season with an ankle injury, has been replaced in the lineup for now by junior Rickey Jefferson, who likely would have been starting at other schools last year. Jefferson has played 20 games with one start in two seasons and tied for the team lead with two interceptions last year. Just after Thomas appeared to be recovering well from his knee injury and surgery in spring drills, he was arrested on charges of unlawful entry of a dwelling and simple burglary last June and suspended from the team.
