Saturday Morning Quarterback - Lebanon Democrat

Jody Atwood played football for Mark Medley and baseball for Woody Hunt. Jody Atwood was one of Lebanon’s rising Little League stars when I began covering Wilson County sports in the mid-1980s, playing for Lebanon Democrat legend, and longtime Kiwanis Little League coach Billy Carr. His star continued to rise as he had added football to his resume by the time I returned to Lebanon in 1994. He also had become quite a singer in Lebanon High stage productions. Cumberland coach Woody Hunt beat out several of his rivals for the baseball services of Atwood. He soon found himself in a tug of war with one of his fellow CU employees as well with Atwood in the middle. Powell is well known to generations of middle Tennesseans who watched her on Channel 8 (or Channel 2 before Nashville’s Music City PBS and ABC affiliates swapped their frequencies in dramatic fashion in 1974) on such shows as “Jellybean Junction”... By the late 1990s, she was a music teacher at Cumberland and one of the singers in her chorus also pitched, played a corner infield position and served as designated hitter for the school’s baseball team. About a week before spring break one year, Hunt was lamenting the possibility of not having Atwood with the Bulldogs during their spring break trip to Florida. Apparently Hunt had wrestled with Powell before and the experience had not gone well. Source: www.lebanondemocrat.com
