LSU junior tight end DeSean Smith’s father Gary Smith was friends with state trooper Steven J. Vincent, who died Monday after being shot in the head with a shotgun by a motorist he was trying to help out of a ditch near Lake Charles on Sunday. “They were in the academy together,” DeSean Smith said Monday after LSU’s football practice. “They would ride together to the academy (in Baton Rouge) back in 2003. I didn’t personally know him, but he and my dad hung out. Smith spoke to his father on the phone Monday. “Dad is really down,” he said. Vincent, 43, is survived by his wife Katherine and son Ethan, who is 9. “I know my dad was sad about it,” Smith said. Smith plans to also become a state trooper by attending the same State Police Training Academy his father and Vincent did in Baton Rouge. “I want to follow in my dad’s footsteps,” he said. “I want to be a state trooper. I just want to go out there, and I want to protect and I want to help the community. And I want to help the state as much as I can. I’m going to be one of those guys that’s going to be out there to help. Source: www.shreveporttimes.com
