1992 10Best Cars - Car and Driver

Victimized largely by advancing competition, the Taurus line, which had made our Ten Best Cars list for each of the past six years, has been replaced for 1992 by Ford Division’s premium standard-hearer, the Ford Taurus SHO. Constant readers will recall that this version of the Taurus—which, like the entire line, got a sheetmetal redo for 1992—is Ford’s 0-ship, a quietly styled sedan with the heart of a lion beating beneath its skin. The feline power and smoothness of the Yamaha 24-valve 3. 0- liter V-6 makes the SHO a true high-performance sports sedan that can take on anything in its price range and emerge from the contest with its head high and its 220-hp heart unbroken. That will change sometime in 1992, say the engineers at Ford, and will surely broaden the appeal of the SHO. We’re happy for Ford but readily admit that we liked having the SHO as our secret. VEHICLE TYPE: front-engine, front-wheel-drive, 5-passenger, 4-door sedan. BASE PRICE: $24,262. ENGINE TYPE(S): DOHC 24-valve 3. 0-liter V-6. Power (SAE net): 220 bhp @ 6200 rpm.
