Bourjos content with Cards, even in reduced role - STLtoday.com

CHICAGO • The way Cardinals outfielder Peter Bourjos sees his situation as baseball’s trade deadline approaches is there might be more playing time elsewhere but there’s more to play for with the Cardinals. “There’s an opportunity to win a World Series with this group,” Bourjos said Wednesday. Nearing the end of his second season with the Cardinals, Bourjos has been cast as a part-time player and, most recently, a defensive closer — called in for late-inning duty on defense. It’s a reduction in duties that has kept Bourjos from extended at-bats, but after talking with his wife and his father, a scout, he recognizes the potential of the team he’s on over the potential of his playing time with that team. Baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline is July 31, and the Cardinals have a short list of wishes and have suggested they have some internal options. In the past, a few teams have inquired about Bourjos. An NL scout whose team had interest in Bourjos this past winter suggested that he has the makeup and defensive skills contending teams covet. This winter Bourjos will be arbitration eligible for the last time and he acknowledged that might be the better atmosphere for a trade or to possibly be set. Source: www.stltoday.com
