10 Questions: Goold on the Cardinals - STLtoday.com

QUESTION: During a recent broadcast, Adam Wainwright said it might not be realistic, but his goal is to be back pitching in October. He did the same thing when he had Tommy John surgery during spring training of 2011. Up until the very end — when Jason Motte closed the World Series — Wainwright maintained a hope to contribute to the team in the postseason. QUESTION: Any thoughts on how the Cardinals will limit the innings for Wacha and Martinez. Do you think they will shut them down or miss some starts at different times so they don't overlap. GOOLD: I would expect the Cardinals to do something with Carlos Martinez like they did with Shelby Miller last season, where around the All-Star break he skips one start so that he goes more than 10 days between starts. That cuts out some innings and allows them to look toward the trade deadline for the addition of an arm that could also cover some innings as breaks happen for Martinez in the second half. He doesn't lose strength during starts. The Cardinals volunteered that he has changed their mind on how many innings he can handle this season. It's possible they don't see that 175ish area as the cap and more like a place to get him and still have him ready for the postseason. That is going to take a skipped start or two at some point, and again the All-Star break could be the opportunity. Source: www.stltoday.com
