Game blog: Cardinals hold on for 3-2 win - STLtoday.com (blog)

LOUIS • Despite giving up two home runs, the St. Louis Cardinals took down the American League Central-leading Kansas City Royals 3-2 on Saturday afternoon. Tyler Lyons, who was pitching in place of the injured Lance Lynn, allowed two home runs in five innings pitched, but he gave up just three hits and struck out six batters. He recorded his first win since defeating the Royals in May 2013. "He just went about making pitches," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. Lyons’ five relievers — Matt Belisle, Randy Choate, Seth Maness, Kevin Siegrist and Trevor Rosenthal — held onto the lead through the last four innings. The Cardinals’ offense provided Lyons some valuable run support as well. A string of singles from Mark Reynolds, Yadier Molina and Jason Heyward gave the Cardinals another run in that inning. Reynolds again contributed to the Cardinals’ offense, smacking a solo home run into left field that gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead. The Cards and Royals face off against tomorrow at 1:15 p. m. REYNOLDS' SOLO HR GIVES CARDS 3-2 LEAD. Mark Reynolds’ fifth-inning solo home run has given the Cardinals a 3-2 lead over the Royals. Source: www.stltoday.com
