The Cardinals’ lineup, still starving for runs, left the team exposed to the failings of its defense, the failings of its bullpen and the potential failings of an umpire as the Cubs swept the doubleheader. The Cubs led throughout the afternoon game for a 7-4 victory, and the hosts rallied in the nightcap for a 5-3 victory. Four of those runs in the finale came after the Cardinals took the lead in the sixth, with the Cubs benefitting from an umpire’s call that couldn’t be challenged and an error that couldn’t be overcome. The Cubs’ first doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals since 1992 and first sweep at Wrigley of the archrivals since 1991 adds some urgency to the final road trip before the All-Star break.
