Convicted robber charged in weekend carjacking of UAB student - AL.com

A 22-year-old Birmingham man just released from prison last month is now formally charged in the weekend carjacking of a UAB student . Birmingham police today announced a first-degree robbery charge against Courtney Lewis. He was taken into custody early Saturday after police say he carjacked the student on Birmingham's Southside and then led police on a chase to a public housing community in the southwest part of the city. Court records show Lewis was convicted in a similar case in 2012, and ordered to prison. Officers arrived on the scene and were taking a statement from the victim when the victim spotted the stolen 2002 Honda Odyssey driving down the street, police said. Police pursued the van to the 100 block of Coolidge Court Way in the Loveman Village public housing community. In addition to the robbery charge, Lewis is also charged with attempting to elude. His bond is set at $30,300. Lewis was arrested and later indicted in 2011 on a first-degree robbery charge. Court records say that he was armed with a pistol when he robbed a man of his four-door Chevrolet Impala, cell phone, wallet, keys and $25. He pleaded guilty to second-degree robbery in 2012, and received a 20-year sentenced with three to serve. Source: www.al.com
