Driver in fatal crash pleads not guilty to vehicular manslaughter - The Union of Grass Valley

A man who reportedly caused a crash that killed his passenger in December 2013 pleaded not guilty in court May 7, and a preliminary hearing into the evidence was set for June 23. William Robert Hawkyard was 18 at the time of the crash in which he... Hawkyard has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, driving at an unsafe speed and making an unlawful turning movement. He pleaded not guilty to those counts, as well as to a failure to appear case and a subsequent vandalism case in Nevada County Superior Court. His prosecution in Nevada County has been delayed by a January 2014 arrest in Placer County in connection with a strong-arm robbery. Hawkyard reportedly was in a store in Rocklin when he tried to conceal a bottle of alcohol in his jacket and leave. A store security guard tried to detain Hawkyard, who reportedly punched him in the face and fled. Hawkyard reportedly then got in a vehicle and fled onto Interstate 80, sparking a short high-speed pursuit. A Grass Valley woman who was arrested in June 2014 after she allegedly failed to stop at a intersection’s left-turn lane, rear-ending a line of stopped cars, chose to waive her right to have a preliminary hearing into the evidence against her.
