The call of the Turbo is hard to ignore, but all engines in the 944 range are good. Porsche purists would scout out my address and force-feed me the contents of their gearbox if I were to state that the 944 and the Cayman shared something other than badge. To the casual observer, the 944 and Cayman hardly look alike and now you’re thinking I’m quite mad, and hold deep political conversations with my kettle. The 944 is an 80’s coupé completely of its time, while the Cayman is a boundary-pushing, sleek, modern road going rocket. Different engines. However, stick with me on this one, for besides the badge and the factory settings, the two share something many Porsches go through. 911-devoted purists claim the Cayman, no matter how dazzling its road manners are, has the engine in the "wrong place". Turn the clocks back 30 years, to when Duran Duran ruled the airwaves and rampant intolerance didn’t get you sacked, and you’ll find that the 944 suffered the same alienation. As with the Cayman today, the 944 was branded by Porsche cliques as an imitator, it wasn’t the ‘real thing’. A totally biased comment but many internet speculators and 911 owners believe it. Yet, thanks to the toffee-nosed snobbery of many, the 944 is far cheaper to purchase than the cosseted 911, with prices well under £1k. £750 will get you a pretty... Jani set a blistering 3m16. 887s early on to take provisional pole, a lap fast enough to be the quickest pole position for the race in terms of laptime since 1989 should it not be beaten. Jani's #18 Porsche and Timo Bernhard's #17 entry immediately laid down markers when the two-hour session began, quickly making it clear that none of the other manufacturers would be a factor in the fight for pole. Audi comfortably had the measure of Toyota in the battle for best of the rest, with Marco Bonanomi slotting the #9 car into fifth early in the session and Benoit Treluyer setting the best laps for the #7 car in the final 30 minutes. Rene Rast spun the #9 car at Mulsanne corner, while Treluyer lost the #7 car at the first Mulsanne chicane long before he settled in for his run of quick laps at the end. The TS040s ended the session more than six seconds off the pace of the Porsches, with a late effort from Stephane Sarrazin jumping the #2 car ahead of the #1 machine in their lonely battle for seventh place. The Toyotas finished the session only three seconds clear of the leading Rebellion entry, with Mathias Beche setting a 3m26. 8s to comfortably beat the team's fastest lap from 2014 qualifying.
