Midstate fishing report: Deep water bite heating up - The Tennessean

Jeff Neely on Cheatham: Fishing success on Cheatham Lake, as always, continues to be heavily dependent upon the current. Early morning top water bites are coming on buzz baits and walking baits. Large crank baits, worms, jigs and shaky heads are producing spotty catches in the main lake area with the aforementioned current being the difference between success and slow bites. Bluegill and catfish must still be in the shallows as I saw a couple coming out of Sycamore Creek with a hefty string hanging from the side of their boat. Bass fishing remains good after dark. Texas rigged worms and ¾-ounce spinner baits are your best choices with darker colors working best. Joey Monteleone on headwaters of Percy Priest (Stones River): I caught 39 bass (three over five pounds) in two trips earlier this week along with several bluegill, redeye and crappie. Fish are tight to cover and move to overhead cover as the sun comes up. Bass are deeper and holding on submerged wood and large rocks. Lures I used included soft plastic, seven-inch Anaconda worm in Okeechobee craw color, Texas rigged with a ½-ounce slip sinker on 30-pound braided line and 3/8-ounce brown skirted buzz bait for the bass. A variety of cup faced top water baits and top water frogs are also drawing surface strikes early in the morning. Source: www.tennessean.com
