2014 Nissan Cube: The Last Year On Sale For Funky Tall Wagon? - Green Car Reports

Sales figures for the Cube have been dismal--just 5,461 Nissan Cubes were sold last year (and 7,667 the year before). Now Nissan has quietly withdrawn the Cube from sale in Canada , leading to inevitable speculation over the oddball wagon's U. S. fate as well. Green Car Reports reached out to Nissan for comment on the future of the Cube, but didn't get a lot of information. "The 2014 Cube will continue to be available at this time," said Dan Passe, Nissan's senior manager for brand communications. [ UPDATE : Just four days after we published this article, Nissan confirmed to trade journal Automotive News that it would withdraw the Cube from the U. S. market. The Nissan Cube was introduced as a 2008 model, two years before the 2010 Kia Soul. Honda's Element was one of the earliest tall-wagon entries, arriving as a 2003 model, and the second-generation Scion xB was launched the same year as the Cube. Looking at this Cube brought back fond memories of our now-gone long-term Cube. A base Cube starts at $15,500, while this Krom edition wears a base price that's $6,470 more. It would be neat if Nissan offered a Nismo version with a little more power and an upgraded suspension. DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: Since my first in-person Cube sighting, I've admired Nissan for taking some risks with the design. But after my recent experience in the Cubelike Scion xB, I wasn't expecting much in the way of driving pleasure from the Cube, particularly given its CVT. But the rest of the Cube was a pleasant surprise. Engine and transaxle noise is well isolated, and road noise was much less intrusive than I would have expected from a boxy subcompact.   The 2011 Nissan Cube is a good choice for shoppers who want standout styling and a unique interior. Its boxy style also means that the Cube offers ample cargo space, provided you fold the rear seats.

  The 2011 Nissan Cube prioritizes its interior space and funky exterior style over performance, but reviewers agreed that the Cube is still a capable commuter with good maneuverability. However, if you’re looking for a quick and nimble 2011 small car, the Cube doesn’t offer the performance of rivals, like the 2011 Mini Cooper. Then again, the Cooper won’t offer nearly as much space when you need to haul large items.

  Inside, reviewers found an interior that’s just as unique as the Cube’s exterior style. If you need good headroom, you’ll appreciate the Cube’s high roofline and comfortable seats up front, while the adjustable rear seats can recline and slide back and forth. The Cube doesn’t have much cargo space with all seats in use. Fold them down, however, and the Cube offers more cargo space than most other small cars.

  The Nissan Cube’s interior quality is about right for the class, but the base model doesn’t have many standard interior features. It comes with power windows and door locks, a basic stereo and keyless entry. However, the SL and Krom Edition trims offer a lot more tech features. You’ll find features like Bluetooth, a USB port, push-button start, touch-screen navigation, satellite radio and a backup camera in fully-loaded models.

  The 2011 Cube performed extremely well in crash tests, while its reliability score is average for the class.

In order to separate itself from the competition, the Nissan Cube possesses such unique features as asymmetrical wraparound side/rear windows, a rear door that swings open refrigerator style, and a loungelike cabin that offers a reclining rear seat and a headliner with a concentric circle design.The Cube utilizes Nissan's global B platform and the brand's 1.8-liter 122-horsepower I-4 mated to either a six-speed manual or continuously variable automatic (CVT). And in California, the Cube is certified as LEV2-SULEV.

  The funky, two-box Cube continues to wow passersby, pedestrians, and drivers alike with its unique asymmetrical rear windows and refrigerator-style rear door. A 1.8 S Krom Edition adds an exterior sport package with 16-inch alloy wheels.

  Interior

  Inside, the Cube presents a "lounge" atmosphere and a curvy architecture, replete with a sofa-style rear bench seat that reclines, an available headliner with "Water Drop" concentric circles, and wavy shapes on the IP, doors, and seats.

  Performance & Handling

  More standstill lounge than on-the-go thrill ride, the Cube was designed as a roomy A-to-B transporter of modest intentions. Thus, the 1.8-liter I-4's 122 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque are nothing more than sufficiently adequate.
