The humble pick-up truck is becoming ever popular in the UK and as manufacturers clamour to build more extravagant, high-spec models to improve their standing as a trade-off between van and SUV, their popularity is only going to grow. We took two of the best in the segment in their more family-friendly trims – the Mitsubishi L200 Barbarian and the Isuzu D-Max Yukon – and put them head-to-head. Pick-ups are hardly the last word in elegance at the best of times so their charm comes entirely from their rugged looks, and the D-Max is the beefier of the two. I love the bulging wheel arches, the big lights and the huge door mirrors, all of which give the Isuzu a presence missing from the L200. I’m not saying there aren’t aspects to the L200 I like though. John Simpson says: Who turns to pick-ups for eye-pleasing looks. Both have a foreboding presence if only for their bulk and size, and if you just look behind the front wheel arches, they’re near identical. Personal choice, I prefer the more sedate Mitsubishi with its more striking and streamlined front-end. Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi L200. The pick-up market has erm, picked up in recent years as carbuyers realise their unique ability to serve as an industrial workhorse in the week and a five-seat family runaround the rest of the time. The second generation D-Max is one of the many versatile but perhaps lesser known options available alongside the Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Navara and Volkswagen Amarok. The test model you see in these pictures came powered by a 2. 5-litre turbo diesel engine with optional all-wheel drive - the only unit available in the D-Max – mated to a six-speed semi-automatic transmission. There isn’t an official 0-62mph time but we’d place it at around 15 seconds and despite its calmer acceleration, the D-Max’s top speed of 112mph is higher than that of the L200 and Ford Ranger. No pick-ups are particularly easy to manoeuvre and measuring almost 5. 3 metres long with a 12. 2 metre turning circle, the L200 is no different. You sit high in the D-Max but a privileged ride height is one of the givens in this segment, elevating the driver higher than virtually any. Source: www.contracthireandleasing.com
