Mini Cooper Hardtop drivers have it pretty good. But show up with two friends and ask them for a ride, and it’s payback time for the rest of us. The problem with the car is that it has rear seats. And with rear seats comes the obligation to have them called into use by others now and then, even if they’re as laughably small as the Mini’s. You grease your passengers up good, jam them in as best you can, even the kids, and then do the same for yourself, settling in and trying not to chew on the steering wheel to much as you contemplate the sounds that your knees make, since you’re... No, the Mini Hardtop is best treated as a two-seater, with the rears permanently folded down to reduce the temptation to use them and increase its ability to carry junk in the trunk, even if that makes you selfish. Well now you can, because tor the first time ever, the folks at Mini have figured out how to squeeze four-doors onto the car. The four-door is just over six inches longer than the two-door, which doesn’t sound like much, but is surprisingly adequate for the task at hand. About half of that is doled out between the wheels, and half again to the rear seats, which also get enough added shoulder room to turn it. Source: www.foxnews.com

ASSOCIATE EDITOR JONATHAN WONG: A friend's utter disgust greeted me when I showed up in the 2011 Mini Cooper S. "I hate those cars," my friend said. I tried to explain the appeal of the Mini from a driver's standpoint. That's too bad because this Cooper S hardtop is better than ever with the small improvements Mini made for the 2011 model year. The turbocharged 1. 6-liter gains BMW's Valvetronic variable-valve-timing system to bump output by 9 hp to 181 hp, which some will naturally assume would increase the car's torque-steering tendencies. Mini thought of that, too, and has added an antitorque steer program to the car's electric-power-steering system. The Mini's six-speed manual gearbox offers precise and crisp shifts, and the suspension keeps things planted around corners while also providing enough absorption abilities for normal commutes--at least to me. Some may consider it a little harsh. They are annoyingly loud, and I recommend anyone who purchases a Mini to replace them right away. For a small commuter car, few things can match this Mini Cooper S for the combination of fuel economy and fun factor. Source: autoweek.com

That being said the Cooper, not to mention our more fun Cooper S test car, gets a long list of small upgrades in numerous areas that help add-on more of what the car does best. Unfortunately, MINI has done nothing to address the car’s few, albeit important, drawbacks. Design wise, it’s barely worth noting the changes to the Cooper S with adjustments so minute it’s even hard to tell this year’s car apart from the 2010 model when parked side by side. TURBOCHARGED ENGINE GETS MORE ‘POP’ More, slightly less-insignificant changes have been made under the hood, with the turbocharged 4-cylinder now getting BMW’s Valvetronic variable valve timing technology, resulting in a bump in power of 9 ponies. Yet as much straight-line acceleration as the Cooper S brings, it absolutely excels on winding roads – especially with the sport button pressed, tightening-up the steering and throttle response to near open-wheel levels. Adding to the enjoyment, MINI has enhanced the popping sound from the engine when under deceleration or when you lift off the throttle. IMPROVED STEERING, BUT GRIP STILL HARD TO COME BY A more functional improvement is new anti-torque steer programming that keeps the wheels pointed forward under hard acceleration.
