That’s what Mazda has done with the fourth version of its MX-5 sports car. According to Kevin Rice, Mazda Europe’s Design Director, all that was achieved by examining every detail and component of the model and making changes wherever something could be done better. But it was a re-examination of what had made the MX-5 arguably the most successful car of its type ever that underpinned the development of the latest version. “And visually, the proportions were at the heart of the attraction of the car. Noting that cars get larger and heavier as they evolve, the brief for the fourth MX-5 was to ‘minimise everything and trim off all unwanted fat’. One tiny example — the wheels on the new car are held by four bolts instead of five on the previous one. Indeed, the combination of all that fat trimming, and the use of more aluminium in body panels and structures, realised a 100kg saving in overall weight on the latest MX-5, in proportionate terms for the small car a massive reduction. The proportions have been revised, with shorter overhangs, the moving back of the A-pillar by a whopping 70mm, and shifting the occupant seats back and lower so that they are right on the centre of gravity of the car. “We have the shortest cabin in the history of the MX-5, yet we give the driver. As it turns out, finding examples of each generation of Miata to drive isn’t terribly difficult. Survey the staff at any car magazine, and chances are you’ll find numerous Miata owners. There’s a good reason for this—the MX-5 is lightweight, agile, and doesn’t need to be driven fast to reach its limits. the current-generation model is priced in the $25,000-to-$30,000 range, and used examples of the first- and second-generation cars can be had for less than $5K. We think more people should drive Miatas, and although this analysis won’t go too... First Generation/NA, 1990–1997. This is the car that started it all, the rear-drive sensation that dragged the small roadster’s image out of the primordial, short-circuiting, oil-percolating British Leyland muck. The example you see here belongs to this author, and it’s a 73,000-mile cream puff previously owned by an elderly couple who bought it new in 1995. Production of the so-called “NA” Miata began in calendar year 1989, and along the way Mazda... Mazda MX-5 Miatas and Bose have gone together like Bud Light and hot dogs since the second-generation car came around in 1999, when the audio brand was applied to an optional sound system for the iconic roadster. Since then, each generation of Miata has offered some form of a Bose-designed audio upgrade, and now Mazda is showing off the all-new fourth-generation Miata ‘s Bose setup. ) Those cars offered sound systems (separate from the ’93’s optional Bose bits) with a pair of speakers in each seat’s headrest. the idea was to deliver sound directly to the occupants’ ears, thus reducing sound degradation with the top down. The speakers were relocated to the rear parcel shelf in the second-generation Miata, while the outgoing, third-gen model sported speakers in the vertical panel between the seats. The 2016 MX-5’s Bose system cuts it classic, however, and includes a pair of 2-inch speakers in the driver- and passenger-seat headrests, as well as one 6. 5-inch speaker in each door, a 1-inch tweeter in each A-pillar, and a 5. 25-inch woofer... Bose supplies a seven-channel amplifier that’s fitted beneath the softtop’s cubby behind the seats, and the system boasts two equalizer settings that automatically adjust based on the status of the roof.
