First drive review: Maserati GranTurismo MC Sportline - Drive

It is a factor that should bode well for Italian car-maker Maserati and its latest GranTurismo coupe spin-off, the MC Sportline. It is priced from $295,000 (plus on-road costs), below the hard-edged, track-focussed MC Stradale that tops the range at $345,000. For that it shares the same engine as the Stradale, but misses out on absolute performance components such its... To make matters more confusing, there is also a MC Sportline Auto Shift ($319,000, not tested here), which gets the same transaxle layout as the Stradale plus its more aggressive six-speed robotised manual transmission and harder single-rate... Driving the MC Sportline at the Hampton Downs circuit in New Zealand is an enlightening experience. However, the true lightbulb moment in defining the MC Sportline comes on a slow lap back to the pits while allowing its powerful six-piston front Brembo brakes to cool. At this time it dawns that the seat warmer in the carbon-fibre backed driver's seat has been on the entire time. Along with the rest of the pampering and spacious four-seat layout, the heat emanating from the leather-wrapped pew illustrates the versatility of the MC Sportline, a vehicle that inherits attributes of a track racer and grand tourer in one. Exterior alterations to the facelifted coupe introduced two years ago are limited to more aggressively flared rocker panels and new 20-inch cast aluminum wheels. Maserati's Media System has been upgraded to include a standard navigation display with traffic information delivery, Sirius satellite radio reception, Bluetooth wireless cell phone connectivity, and a cable hookup for portable media players. Accommodating the new automatic transmission involved a substantial tear-up of the GT model's driveline. Unlike the sibling GT S, which has its 6-speed automated manual box integrated with the final-drive differential in a rear-mounted transaxle, the new automatic edition has its gearbox mated directly to the 4-cam, 32-valve Ferrari-built V-8. While... 0-second 0-60 mph sprints, and a top end just over 180 mph according to the factory. More importantly, it whips up 90 percent of its maximum torque by 3000 rpm and the horsepower curve climbs enthusiastically to a 7000-rpm crescendo.
