From the corporate spindle grill bracketed by L-shaped LED light clusters to the prominent and unique taillights, this SUV stands out. One neat little touch is the visual absence of a key slot on the front doors. Approach the NX and the doors unlock the instant you touch the door handle. Or you can press a button on the fob and open one or all doors. The interior is Lexus-worthy. The sticker price for the front drive NX 300h is $39,720 plus $925 destination charges. the all-wheel drive starts at $41,310. About the same size as Toyota’s RAV4, with which it shares about 10 percent of structural components, the NX showcases Lexus virtues in a small size. Lexus notes that a new trailing arm double wishbone rear suspension separates the coil springs and dampers and aims to optimize agility, stability and ride comfort while also providing an unusually low floor for an SUV. The non-diesel NX was a success right out of launch this year, outselling all its competition except for the already-established Audi Q5 in the first quarter. But the hybrid version is a rare drone in the wild, accounting for only 10 percent of overall NX sales. Hybrid drivetrains generate about as much interest down here as barbecue sauce. Fortunately, I was able to find one in Colorado, a politically greener place where all-wheel drive is a necessity, not a macho amenity. Over four days, I drove the NX 300h in something approximating its natural habitat. The tapered front made it appear knife-like, like a hip snowplow. And Lexus definitely took the “compact” part of the vehicle description. For cars like these, a 104. 7-inch wheelbase almost qualifies as stealth. 5 in-line four-cylinder Atkinson cycle gas engine gets paired with a Lexus Hybrid Drive, generating 194 hp combined. It’s quiet, almost too quiet, as Bugs Bunny might say. But despite that relative lack of power, the NX hybrid ticks all the other important boxes.
