Introduced for 2003, the FX employed the same rigid rear-drive FM platform that underpinned the athletic Infiniti G35 sedan and Nissan Z-car. For the second-generation 2009 models, structural changes yielded a 60-per-cent improvement in torsional stiffness and 240-per-cent more bending resistance. The new FX aped the old one until you looked closely: the gaping-maw grille was bigger, the headlights were sculpted meaner and the bright vents behind the front tires were functional, if tacky, reducing front-end lift by 5 per cent. In addition to its aluminum diet, the front suspension was changed from struts to unequal-length control arms to enhance ride quality (the previous FX rode like an old muscle car). The new FX gained 5 cm in overall length, while the wheelbase was stretched 3 cm to improve legroom marginally. If Frank were around today and designing crossover SUVs instead of edifices, he might have come up with something like our Infiniti FX. When our long-term Infiniti FX50S arrived, we were enamored of its looks and proud of ourselves for choosing pearl-white paint. Even toward the end of its 40,000-mile tenure, the FX continued to attract stares from admiring—and perplexed—motorists. But like a Frank Lloyd Wright creation, the FX had its peculiarities. We can’t knock the FX50S for its performance. Our end-of-test numbers match almost identically those gathered when the FX was fresh. The 0-to-60-mph time held the line at a respectable 5. 1 seconds. The FX line first entered the world as a concept car in 2001, with a design brief from Infiniti that described it as a “Bionic Cheetah. At first glance the new FX looks a lot like its predecessor, but upon closer inspection the first-generation version comes across as positively staid compared with the new car. Granted, the vents behind the front wheels are downright tacky, but Infiniti claims they’re functional, reducing front-end lift by five percent. The unibody is still a derivative of Nissan’s FM (front midship) platform—the same one that underpins the 350Z and every Infiniti except the QX56 land yacht—with structural improvements that yield claimed increases of 60 percent in torsional...
