They’ve become big fans of the United States’ Women’s World Cup soccer team, and according to the Nielsen viewership numbers they are the most ardent in the nation. The American women have played four games thus far in the tournament and those contests, which have been shown on Fox or Fox Sports 1, have been seen in an average of 4. 9 percent of homes in the market. Louis also is atop the list for ratings of all matches in the tourney (not just U. S. games), with 1. 2 percent of area homes tuning in. Washington is second, at 1. 1. The national average is 0. 8. Astonishing to some is that the U. S. women’s... The American women’s game on Tuesday, a victory over Nigeria, drew a better rating (6. 5) than any of Cup finals contests did in St. Louis. There was considerable angst in the local soccer community last year when the men’s World Cup fared poorly in St. Louis ratings compared to national viewership trends. That’s the notion that these ratings point to women’s soccer overtaking the men in popularity locally — which isn’t true, at least in a TV viewership sense.
