Running as if to attempt a diving catch on a bloop hit, Matt Holliday left his feet and came down jarringly on his right knee. The Cardinals’ No. 3 hitter and potential All-Star rolled to his back and reached at his leg, apparently wincing from pain. The Cardinals would later determine he had strained his right quadriceps. The Cardinals, their lineup thinning with injury, have already had two players strain their quadriceps muscle so far this season, and neither will return in less than 2½ months. With Major League Baseball’s draft going on Monday night even after the end of the team’s game, manager Mike Matheny had not yet had a chance to caucus with the front office about a potential move. Lackey (4-4) allowed 10 runs in four innings and left the rest of the game for the bullpen to cover, so Matheny mentioned it’s possible the team would look to immediately add a reliever while assessing Holliday’s availability. A move for a bat could happen in stages as the team looks at the readily available Xavier Scruggs before considering a move that would require putting a prospect, like Stephen Piscotty, on the active roster. DENVER • Cardinals starter Lance Lynn returned to St. Louis on Tuesday for a series of exams on his right forearm, which tightened on him during Sunday’s start and left the team concerned about the root cause of the discomfort. Lynn was not with the team during Tuesday’s game, and manager Mike Matheny said that the results of the pitcher’s meeting with medical officials were not finalized. Asked about Lynn’s absence, general manager John Mozeliak emailed a response, explaining he wouldn’t address the pitcher’s situation until Friday. Lynn described the sensation as cramping, and he said it’s similar to sensations that he’s pitched through before. He said the cramping in his forearm was something he had experienced as far back as college, and it hasn’t inhibited his ability to recover and make his next start. The Cardinals had Lynn get treatment for the cramping Monday at Coors Field, and they elected to have him travel for a deeper examination of the forearm’s structure. The Cardinals often will ask their medical team to explore the possibility of weaknesses elsewhere in the body to explain an injury and then look to address those weaknesses.
