Buddy Landel, who passed away last week at the age of 53, never had a problem admitting to anyone that he — far too often — had been his own worst enemy. In a lengthy 2011 piece titled “The Redemption of Buddy Landel,” he readily acknowledged a litany of mistakes and missteps that not only derailed his promising wrestling career, but also wreaked havoc on his personal life. “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel was one of the hottest young stars in the business during a brief period in the mid-1980s. After all, Landel was making money hand over fist and headlining shows with the likes of NWA world champion Ric Flair, whom he emulated, and was rocketing to the top of his profession. But Landel had one thing that would ultimately spell his downfall, and that was an addictive personality. Undependable and unreliable, prompting many bookers to label him “No Show Budro,” his star extinguished just as it was ready to shine, and his career flamed out in a long-running battle with drug addiction. JEFFERSON COUNTY • Authorities in Jefferson County on Thursday recovered the bodies in Buck Creek of two women believed to have been swept away in flash flooding southwest of Festus. Her body was found about 5:30 p. m. Missouri Highway Patrol spokesmen said Barrett’s body was about three-quarters of a mile from where cars were swept into the creek Wednesday night, near the intersection of Highway 67 and Buck Creek Spur Road. Barrett had been driving a maroon Buick and Kirby a GMC van. Al Nothum said officials believe that there were no other victims. Juston Wheetley said all victims were believed to be accounted for. Kirby Moon, 47, of De Soto, who said he was Barrett’s boyfriend, told a reporter that Barrett had called family overnight and said her vehicle was filling with water. Nothum said a firefighter was driving on Highway 67 around 10 p. m. Wednesday and saw a woman on top of a car. The firefighter also said he saw a van on Buck Creek Spur Road coming toward the woman’s car. The van got washed away in Buck Creek and may have knocked into the woman’s car, sending it into the creek, too. Earlier, police had said they don’t know if the woman seen atop the car might have escaped on her own. But on Thursday night Wheetley said that woman was determined to be Barrett. LOUIS • Eight people were hospitalized after four separate weekend incidents involving gunshots fired from vehicles on St. Louis streets and highways. Three of the victims were shot early Saturday on westbound Interstate 70. Authorities said the injured women had just left downtown St. Louis when gunfire erupted about 3:45 a. m. According to police, someone in a black SUV, perhaps a GMC Envoy,... But as he pulled to the shoulder, police said, the SUV pulled alongside a second car, firing on the occupants. Their conditions were not available, but police said they were stable. It was not known which vehicle she was in. The I-70 shooting took place about 90 minutes after St. Louis police responded to a report of a man, 19, shot by the occupant of a red Grand Prix as the man stood at a parking lot in the 1000 block of... As the Grand Prix sped away, the victim was taken by friends to a hospital, where he was listed in critical but stable condition with wounds to the lower back. An hour earlier, police said, a 20-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the wrist as he was driving east on Ridge Avenue near Union Boulevard. Police again said only that the victim was stable.
