In Menlo Park, Many Lose Cars After Driving with Suspended License - KQED

Rene Macedo Nolasco, a night shift worker, was driving home late at night on May 2 from his job at the Tesla Motors plant in Fremont when he noticed flashing lights in his rearview mirror. Twenty minutes later, a Menlo Park police officer had cited him for driving with a revoked license, a misdemeanor. Macedo Nolasco could have reclaimed his car in 30 days — if he’d had the money to cover the $60 to $80 daily tow yard storage charges, plus other fees. “I’m not going to get it out from the impound lot because it’s too much money,” said Macedo Nolasco, 27, a father of two. Menlo Park police citations and vehicle impounds for driving with a suspended license nearly tripled from 2008 to 2014, making this misdemeanor the top crime in the city, according to a Peninsula Press analysis of data from the Police Department. But police data also show that seven out of 10 drivers cited for a suspended license over a four-month time period were Latino or African-American. Drivers who have been cited say the rules and police attention make their lives harder and are unfairly resulting in stops and citations against Latinos and African-Americans. Source: ww2.kqed.org

Elkhart police officers reported to the 1300 block of Delaware Street at 10:31 p. m. Friday regarding a fight involving several subjects, according to a police report. Both victims were transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of what police said appear to be non-life threatening wounds. • Mayolo Salazar, 42, sustained minor injuries to his knee, lower leg and foot after a head-on crash on Clinton Street at 10:42 p. m. Thursday, according to police reports. Salazar, of 202 Brookside Manor, told police he was driving his 2013 Chrysler Town and Country SUV west bound on Clinton Street from Greene Road when he saw a silver 2006 Nissan 350Z approaching what appeared to be a high speed. Salazar said he saw the vehicle go left of center and began to drive off the road to avoid a crash. • Katherine Miller, 20, of Goshen, sustained minor injuries to her face after a crash at 3:03 p. m. Friday in the 100 block of U. S. 33. The comments by MacDonald came prior to the board unanimously approving Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the Pinal County Recorder and Elections Department to provide services for the upcoming consolidation election. "The employees knew on Wednesday, June 10 when the board approved the resolution," Wallace said. Wallace said the reason the staff did not know about the consolidation earlier is because they didn't know if it would be a go. . "District attorneys investigated and felt there was a conflict between two state statues," Wallace said. "Then they asked for an attorney general opinion that had to be answered by June 16.
