2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty King Ranch Crew Cab review notes - AutoWeek

ROAD TEST EDITOR JONATHAN WONG: This 2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty King Ranch is a whopper with monster capabilities that I wasn’t going to come anywhere near maxing out on my trip to the supply store to pickup stuff for the family restaurant. Obviously that’s not going to tax the F-350’s diesel at all, so I can’t really speak to the truck’s hauling performance. The older Ford, while still quite smooth and quiet, doesn’t match the newer GM trucks. You detect a little more vibration in the Ford’s cabin, and the ride isn’t quite as buttoned up as the Chevy and GMC. It’s actually quite impressive with the type of road manners that Ford, GM and Chrysler are dishing out in these big trucks nowadays. But compared to the newer GMs, the Ford doesn’t feel as refined with jumpier rear end. It’s probably splitting hairs and it doesn’t really matter, because when it comes to big trucks, brand loyalty trumps all in most cases. Ford guys are still going to buy their F-series trucks no matter what, and Chevy folks are going to be getting a Silverado. Source: autoweek.com

  • Ford F-350 Super Duty Review - Research New ... - Edmunds

Sometimes, a regular coffee just won't do it. You need something on the order of a double cappuccino to get the job done -- something with more kick, more muscle. For pickup truck buyers needing a similar boost, there's the Ford F-350 Super Duty. More robust than even the capable F-250, the F-350 Super Duty is fit for extreme grunt work thanks to the availability of a dual rear-wheel setup ("dually") that greatly improves stability when towing. And in Ford pickup tradition, the F-350 is available with a wide choice of body styles, powertrain options and trim levels. Another reason this heavy hauler is a fave is that it's also easy to drive and comfortable to ride in.

Recent improvements to the Ford F-350 Super Duty have yielded a stronger turbodiesel V8, even better ride and handling dynamics and a redesigned cabin with higher-quality materials. Still, there are a few other choices to consider, as Chevy and Dodge also offer worthy choices in this powerhouse field.

Current Ford F-350 Super DutyThe Ford F-350 Super Duty is available in three body styles (regular cab, extended cab, crew cab) and five trim levels (base XL, midlevel XLT, luxurious Lariat, horse-saddle-inspired King Ranch and ultra-plush Platinum). There is a choice of two powerful engines -- a 6.2-liter gasoline V8 (385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque) and an optional 6.7-liter "PowerStroke" turbodiesel cranking out 400 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Buyers can choose either two- or four-wheel drive across the board. A dual-rear-wheel setup is offered as well, which allows it to carry more weight in the bed while providing greater stability when towing a heavy trailer.

In reviews, we've found much to like about the latest F-350. We're duly impressed by the Super Duty's flexibility that allows it to be configured for a variety of uses -- from a down-and-dirty work truck to a luxurious hauler. Regardless of which route you choose, you'll also be treated to refined ride and handling and high feature content.

Used Ford F-350 Super Duty ModelsThe latest generation of the Ford F-350 Super Duty debuted for the 2008 model year. Compared to earlier F-350s, it had revised styling, a stronger frame, better handling dynamics, a nicer interior and an improved turbodiesel engine. Initial engine choices consisted of a standard 5.4-liter V8 (300 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque), an optional 6.8-liter V10 (362 hp and 457 lb-ft) and the optional 6.4-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8 (350 hp and 650 lb-ft). Transmission choices were a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic.

The following year saw a wealth of new features become available that included the Sync voice control system. This was also the first year for the Harley-Davidson package, complete with plenty of chrome badges and black leather trim, and the off-road-oriented package dubbed Cabela's (after the outdoor enthusiasts retailer). The current 385-hp gas V8 and 400-hp turbodiesel engines debuted for 2011, as did updated exterior styling. Other changes were minimal until 2013, when upgraded brakes, the posh Platinum trim level and the MyFord Touch infotainment interface all debuted. The latter could be prone to glitches, so make sure a used F-350 has the latest software updates.

The previous generation Ford F-350 Super Duty ran from 1999-2007. The debut of this version marked the first time that Ford gave its heavy-duty pickups their own style. Compared to the soft contours of the F-150 of the time, the angular Super Duty with its massive grille looked every bit the square-jawed brute that lay under the skin.

Initially, the typical trim levels of base XL, decently equipped XLT and plush Lariat were offered in standard-, extended- and crew-cab body styles. Engine choices included the standard 5.4-liter V8 as well as the optional 6.8-liter V10 and 7.3-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8. A five-speed manual was standard, with a four-speed automatic optional.

If you're looking for a used Ford F-350 Super Duty, there are a few year-by-year changes to be aware of. In 2001, updates were made that included standard four-wheel ABS for all trims, an available reverse parking sensor, heated seats for the Lariat and more power for the PowerStroke engine. The following year brought a six-speed manual, new seats and the option of power-adjustable pedals.

For 2003, the FX4 off-road package debuted, as did (for crew cabs) an optional power moonroof and the King Ranch edition. A smaller yet more powerful 6.0-liter PowerStroke replacing the 7.3-liter version debuted that year as well. The 6.0-liter diesel engine, however, has a reputation for questionable reliability. For 2005, the big news was a new five-speed automatic transmission, an upgraded front suspension, a new grille and headlight design and increased towing and hauling capacities. The next few years saw just minor changes to feature and package availability.

In a review that pitted this generation Ford F-350 Super Duty against its Chevy and Dodge rivals, the Ford placed 2nd. The F-350's chief strengths included a refined ride and competent handling and braking. Demerits were given for behind-the-pack performance when towing an 8,600-pound trailer and the cabin's lack of storage and odd mix of cheap plastics and upscale trim.

Previous to 1999, the F-350 (it wasn't called the Super Duty yet) was visually virtually indistinguishable from the F-150. However, with available muscle that included a 7.3-liter V8 and the PowerStroke turbodiesel, it was obviously up to much more demanding towing and hauling tasks.

2011 Ford F Series Super Duty Front

2011 Ford F Series Super Duty Duallie Front Three Quarter Pulling Bulldozer

Getting ready for the drive to Los Angeles from Phoenix after Ford's introduction of the new Super Duty, we saw a running 2011 F-250 sitting in front of the hotel where we had been staying for the event. As the hotel's main doors slid open, we could hear a loud clackety-clack, the sound you'd associate with a truck's diesel engine. For a moment, we wondered if Ford's claims of a quieter engine been false. However, the Super Duty was blocking the view of the courtesy van that was actually making all that noise, and when it pulled out of the parking lot, there sat the F-250, quietly purring away.

    More on Motortrend.com:

We had just spent a couple days behind the wheel of the new Super Duty, and were about to take it on a road trip home. Our Ford was a diesel four-wheel-drive single-rear-wheel short-bed F-250 Crew Cab Lariat, also equipped with the topline King Ranch package.

2011 Ford F Series Super Duty Front In Water

Ford's pickup looks similar to the 2010 model, except for a few noticeable differences. For example, the new grille uses two thick, solid horizontal bars (not unlike those seen on the F-250 Super Chief concept) in black or chrome with a huge 13-inch-wide Ford blue oval dead center. In addition, the hood now has a power dome, allowing more clearance to accommodate the new diesel engine. The fuel door is now wider, making room for the filler spot for the Diesel Exhaust Fluid, said to need refilling every 7500 miles, depending on the demands put on the truck. Wheels come in 17- to 20-inch sizes. There are two engines available in the new Ford, neither of which is carryover. The base engine, a 6.2-liter V-8, replaces the three-valve 5.4-liter V-8 offered through 2010. The new engine puts out 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque, up 85 and 40 respectively, while it's said to improve fuel economy by 15 percent. This size/weight category isn't rated by the EPA for fuel economy, so those numbers are based on Ford's estimates. We spent a short stretch on the road with the 6.2-powered Super Duty, and you can definitely feel the increase in power with the new engine. Response off the line is much quicker, the engine's growl much more menacing, and the excellent new 6R140 six-speed automatic works well with this V-8. However, the Super Duty feels like it's gained some weight, so the difference isn't as great as 85 more horsepower would suggest.

Where we spent most of our time was trying out the new diesel. The previous Power Strokes had been built by Navistar International for Ford, but after several disputes and lawsuits, that relationship soured. The diesel in the 2011 Super Duty represents years of work in-house, using some technology from Ford Europe but designed with heavy-duty work in mind. The new diesel offers 390 horsepower and 735 pound-feet of torque-both best in class-improvements of 40 horsepower and 85 pound-feet. Ford also reduced engine weight with the use of a compact graphite iron block, but made the block stronger in the process: CGI is said to have twice the strength of gray iron, typically used in iron blocks. The engine also uses aluminum heads. The engineers designed the engine layout to make it easier to manage noise and vibration, and the result of their work is an engine that is incredibly quiet; as has been the industry trend for the last couple of years, this is a modern diesel, one you can't hear from a distance and doesn't fill the cabin with noise. Yet it's also much more powerful than before, making the Super Duty pull away from traffic lights like a heavy-duty hot rod. And the new engine, which is B20 biodiesel compatible, comes with an exhaust brake.

2011 Ford F Series Super Duty Side Sliding

Federal regulations for 2010 create a new, significantly stricter requirement for diesel emissions, so it's no coincidence that the new 6.7-liter Power Stroke is dramatically cleaner-producing less NOx-than before. This engine uses multiple technologies to reduce emissions, starting with exhaust gas recirculation. Some of the exhaust gases are cooled by engine water at about 90 degrees Celsius, and then routed into a low-temperature loop, a second cooling system in the engine that operates at about 50 degrees C (and also serves as added transmission cooling). The cooler inert gases displace oxygen and lower combustion temperatures, which together reduces the amount of NOx that's produced in the cylinder. This EGR system uses a hot-side valve, before the cooler, to reduce the amount of deposits that can get into poppets and seals, improving durability and reducing possible warranty issues. The rest of the emissions work takes place after the fact, in the exhaust system. At the diesel oxidation catalyst, hydrocarbons are heated and converted into water and CO2. The heat created helps make the rest of the system's emissions reduction process more efficient. In the next phase, selective catalytic reduction, diesel exhaust fluid, a mix of urea and water, becomes C02 and ammonia when heated. When the ammonia mixes with the exhaust gases and is exposed to the catalyst in the SCR system, what NOx was produced during combustion is converted into nitrogen and water. The diesel particulate filter traps any soot that was produced, and burns it away (called regeneration), when the soot trap is full.

Behind the high-tech, efficient, and much more powerful diesel is the same six-speed automatic as the one that is used with the gas engine. While a manual transmission is no longer available, the automatic provides several ways to control what gear the truck is in, making it easy to manage while towing and when off-road. You can put it in Drive and shift up or down with the +/- buttons along the collar of the steering-column-mounted shifter stalk. This also defines what the truck's top gear is at the time-if you are in sixth and push "-" until you're in fourth, that becomes the highest gear the truck will use until you tell it otherwise (or until potential damage could be done by keeping in that gear). If you want to get back into fifth or sixth, push "+." This is called Progressive Range Select. Want more control than that? There is a manual mode, labeled M, which you can shift to in the PRNDM21 layout. It also uses the plus/minus buttons. And there's a tow/haul mode, which assists with braking and transmission shift points. The new six-speed worked very well behind both engines with consistently smooth and timely shifts. Plus, the +/- buttons are in a great, easy-to-reach spot on the stalk. Our only gripe, and it's a minor one, is that we noticed in our preproduction test truck that there were a few abrupt downshifts at low speed. Capability is key in the heavy-duty pickup truck segment, and the new Super Duty does not disappoint. Maximum towing capacity is 24,400 pounds (F-450) and maximum payload capacity is 6520 pounds. Those numbers are best in class-Chevrolet just released its 2011 Silverado HD's specs, which are 20,000 and 6335. Even if you remove the F-450 from the equation, the F-350's 21,600-pound towing capacity is still better than that of the Silverado 3500HD. For those who are going to use their truck for fifth-wheel or gooseneck towing, Ford now offers a $400 prep package for longbed trucks that adds a frame-mounted crossmember, five laser-cut holes in the bed including covers, and seven-pin connector integrated into the inner wall of the bed on the driver's side.

2011 Ford F Series Super Duty Leather Interior

Other new features for the Super Duty include trailer sway control, trailer brake, hill descent control, tire-pressure monitoring, and a new 4.2-inch LCD screen. Located between the gauges, this screen allows you to control what is on the display and tracks things such as fuel economy, oil and transmission temperature, turbo boost, trip time, gallons of fuel used, truck angles when off-road, and you can store information about trailers you tow with the truck. There's even a checklist included for novice towers. The hill-start assist feature applies brakes when at a stop, preventing the truck (and trailer) from rolling back. To fill the gap from when you take your foot off the brake pedal to when you put it on the gas pedal, the system holds the brakes for two seconds before gradually reducing the amount of brake assist. If a trailer is connected to the truck, and you're stopped for longer than six seconds, the trailer brake will also be used. This system provides a lot of confidence while towing and can keep a trailer from rolling back into the vehicle behind you. And for those who want to go off-road, there are two options: an electronic locking diff, controlled by a pull-out knob on the dash, or, on XL- and XLT-equipped trucks, a floor-mounted shift lever and manual locking hubs. Ford also offers a military-grade spray-in bedliner, and a power takeoff that can be used when the vehicle is in motion. Ford's Work Solutions, which allows you to track where your tools are, keep tabs on other vehicles in the fleet, and access the Internet and download and print forms, is optional.

2011 Ford F Series Super Duty Left Side

The suspension uses an independent twin I-beam with coil springs in front for the 2WD F-250 and F-350, mono-beam front for the F-450 and 4WD 250/350. In back, they all use a live axle with leaf springs. Steering geometry has been revised for 2011. What we noticed compared with previous models is the 2011's steering has a slightly slower response to driver input. This would be a disadvantage in a sport sedan, but in a vehicle that's going to be used for towing heavy trailers, it makes it easier to smoothly make minor corrections while on the road. The trucks use four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, and side and side-curtain airbags are available. Dimensions are close to the 2010 model's; wheelbase is identical, length is up by about 0.6 inch, width and height are within half an inch. Bed dimensions are also the same as before. In the cab, headroom is down about 0.7 inch in front, 0.3-0.6 inch in the second row, legroom is unchanged in front and down slightly in the rear, and hip- and shoulder room remain the same. In addition to the new screen and updated interior, there's also a new flow-through center console, with plenty of large storage spaces and a 110-volt inverter on the back. Also available for the cabin is a set of four auxiliary switches to control miscellaneous trucker accessories.

2011 Ford F Series Super Duty Front Three Quarter On Rocks

On the 400-mile drive, we found the King Ranch F-250 to be comfortable and remarkably quiet. Power delivery is fantastic, with 735 pound-feet of torque available at 1600 rpm and a terrific six-speed. Brakes are firm, but not twitchy. The ride feels better than in the last Super Duty, but still rides like a truck. Inside, the seats provide plenty of soft leather and cushioning, but won't lull you to sleep on a long drive. The driver information screen was intimidating at first, but toggling through the options and selecting the display you want is actually very easy-just push the directional keys on the steering wheel and select "OK." The order the information is listed in makes logical sense, too (the trip computer screen is just before the fuel economy screen, for example), so it wouldn't take long to learn the order and toggle through without having to take your eyes off the road. As it is, you won't have to give it more than a glance to see what's going on. And, going 75 mph for most of the drive-or at least where the speed limit allowed for that-the truck loped along at 1750 rpm and provided 18 mpg fuel economy, all on a single tank with plenty to fuel to spare. Official pricing has not yet been released, but Ford did say that for some models there will be no increase in price from 2010, and in the case of the regular cab two-wheel-drive chassis-cab F-550, the price actually goes down $530. This means that the added cost of the new emissions system won't be passed along to the buyer. If pricing is as competitive as Ford says, you get best-in-class capability and a faster truck, with improved fuel economy and more cool options. That makes this truck a great value, and should prove a tough one to beat.

The Ford Super Duty is a line of trucks (over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg) GVWR) that were launched by Ford in early 1998 for the 1999 model year. The F-250 to F-550 Super Duties are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky. The F-650 and F-750 Super Duties were assembled at the Blue Diamond Truck plant in Mexico prior to 2014, when production was shifted to Avon Lake, Ohio.

The Super Duty trucks are larger, heavier built series pickup trucks with heavier-duty body-on-frame steel ladder frames, axles, springs, brakes, transmissions, more powerful engines, and all other heavier/bigger components (with much higher payload and towing capacities) than the older traditional equivalent F-250, F-250HD (Heavy Duty), and F-350 Ford truck lines. The two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive model frames are the same in the F-250 and F-350 series, making conversion from a two-wheel-drive model to a four-wheel-drive model less difficult than in other truck models. F-350 chassis cab, F-450 and F-550 frames and suspension are the same between the two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models. The trucks were once under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for steering failures, but the investigation revealed the failures were driver error and had nothing to do with design.[3]

In 1960, Ford re-branded the heaviest-GVWR versions of the F-Series (F-950) as Super Duty models; these were powered by the Ford gasoline engines of the same name.[4] In 1963, the Super Duty name reappeared on the gasoline-engined variants of the N-Series trucks.[5]

On the F-Series line, the Super Duty name first appeared as the "F-Super Duty" in 1987 on Class 4 chassis-cab models.

For the 1999 model year, Ford shifted the F-250 and F-350 truck lines to a design mechanically and cosmetically distinct from that of the F-150. The F-350 was not available for 1998, while a lighter-duty version of the F-250 was available that year with the F-150's body. By using two separate but related platforms for F-Series trucks, the inevitable compromises inherent in offering a wide range of load-carrying capacities were avoided. The main competition, General Motors, followed suit for the 2001 model year, when the GMC Sierra 3500 was introduced.

For the first time, larger trucks utilized a different design distinct from the smaller F-150 half-ton pickups. Although considered part of the F-Series, the Super Duty trucks shared no common body components aside from their taillights; under the skin, only the 5.4L V8 was shared. The front was more boldly angular with a raised hood, similar to the Dodge Ram. As an industry first, 2 large complete ring-style front tow hooks were included. The side windows dropped lower forward in the door like a commercial medium to heavy duty truck (similar to a Kenworth "Daylight Door"), the grille was narrower and taller as if from a larger truck, and optional manual-telescoping trailer tow mirrors were available.

    2002 Ford F-250 with 20-foot (6.1 m) enclosed trailer for four motorcycles

There were three cab options: Regular cab (2–3 passengers) with two doors, SuperCab (5–6 passengers), which included two small "suicide" doors at the rear, and the Crew Cab (5-6 passengers) with four full doors. The Super and Crew cabs came with 6 3?4-foot (2.1 m) and 8-foot (2.4 m) full-size bed options, but the regular cab was only available with the 8-foot bed. The F-250 Super Duty would serve as the base platform for the Ford Excursion which was the only passenger SUV larger than the Chevrolet Suburban and its twin, the GMC Yukon XL.

The Ford F-350 Super Duty first generation was also assembled in Venezuela as a commercial small truck from 1999 to 2010. For this market the F-350 featured the 5.4L V8 Triton engine, a 5-speed manual transmission, and a choice of 4x2 or 4x4.

Ford Super Duty trucks were built in Brazil, with different engines than its North American counterparts and fewer options, initially between 1999 and 2011, with a limited reintroduction of the F-350 in 2014. The dual-rear wheel variant of the F-350 is known locally as F-4000. They were widely exported to Australia (F-250 and F-350), South Africa (F-250) and Argentina (F-250, rebadged as F-100, and the F-350 DRW rebadged as F-4000), usually following the Brazilian specification (with an obvious change of the cockpit location in the versions targeted to Australia, South Africa and other RHD markets) but Australia had a wider range of options in pair with its American counterparts, including automatic transmission and the V8 engines.[7]

    Powertrain[edit] Engines[edit]

The Super Duty had several available engines.

A 2-valve-per-cylinder 5.4 L Modular V8 with 255 horsepower (190 kW) and 350 ft·lbf (470 N·m) of torque was standard, while the 2-valve-per-cylinder 6.8 L Modular V10 with 310 horsepower (230 kW) and 425 ft·lbf (576 N·m) of torque was an option. In 1999, power output for the 16V 5.4L V8 increased slightly from 255 hp to 260 hp. For the 2005–2008 model years, all models equipped with the 5.4L Triton received the 3V SOHC heads. Power was now rated at 300 hp with 365 lb/ft of torque.

    Similarly, the MY2005 Triton V10 received 3-valve heads and output was raised to 362 hp (270 kW) and 457 lb·ft (620 N·m).

    7.3 Power Stroke[edit]

The 7.3 Power Stroke turbodiesel with 235 horsepower (175 kW) and 500 ft·lbf (680 N·m) of torque from 1999 to 2000 and upped to 250 hp (190 kW) and 525 ft·lbf (712 N·m) of torque in 2001 thru first-quarter 2003 trucks equipped with an automatic transmission or 275 hp (205 kW) and 525 ft·lbf (712 N·m) of torque for trucks equipped with a manual transmission.

    6.0 Power Stroke[edit]

The 6.0 Power Stroke with a variable-vane turbo was phased in starting in the second quarter of 2003; this engine produced 325 horsepower (242 kW) and 560 ft·lbf (760 N·m) of torque. The 6.0 L 32-valve pushrod-actuated Power Stroke single-turbo diesel was modified in 2004, boosting torque to 580 ft·lbf (790 N·m), but power remained the same as the previous version with 325 horsepower (242 kW). Due to impending tighter emissions requirements, along with a very high warranty exposure and over 500 full vehicle buybacks (175 by one northern California law firm alone),[8] 2007 models were the last to include the 6.0 L diesel.

    Brazilian versions[edit]

Engines used in Brazil did not follow the American specifications so closely. The only gasoline-powered engine officially available for the F-250 in Brazil, Argentina and other regional export markets which were not supplied by the Venezuelan-built Super Duty was the Essex 4.2L V6, alongside at least one locally sourced turbodiesel option, while the F-350 SRW and its DRW derivative known locally as F-4000 were only available with 4-cylinder turbodiesels. For the F-250, Diesel options were the Cummins B3.9 rated at 141 hp from its introduction until 2001, the 4.2L inline-6 MWM 6.07 TCA rated at 180 hp from '99 to 2005, and the electronically-controlled Cummins ISB3.9 rated at 203 hp from late-2005 to 2011. The F-350/F-4000 had the same mechanically-controlled Cummins B3.9 from '98 to 2011, de-rated in 2005 from 141 hp to 120 hp for emissions-compliance, and phased out in late-2011, to be reintroduced only in 2014 with a high-speed Cummins ISF2.8 rated at 150 hp. The entire range was fitted exclusively with 5-speed manual transmissions from Mazda (V6 F-250), Eaton (Diesel F-250) and ZF (F-350/F4000). 4WD was introduced locally only in 2005 to Cummins-powered F-250 and F-4000.

An optional 4R100 4-speed automatic was available for either the gas or diesel engines, later being replaced with the TorqShift 5-speed automatic. The 5-speed automatics are rated at exactly 1,000 lb (450 kg) higher towing capacity than trucks with the standard 5/6-speed manual transmission. The 6-speed manual transmission comes with an integrated PTO.

    Torqshift 5R110[edit]

The Torqshift 5-speed 5R110 automatic transmission replaced the 4-speed in the 2003 model year truck in order to compete with the Allison 1000 series from General Motors; it was paired with the new 6.0 L diesel engine. The TorqShift design in fact has six forward ratios, but only five are advertised, with the 'hidden' gear only used in extreme cold weather. The TorqShift 1st to 5th gear ratios are 3.11, 2.22, 1.55, 1.00, and 0.71:1. It also utilizes an alternate 4th gear, overdrive on 2nd gear of the 3-speed automatic component (0.72 x 1.55), that is 1.10:1 that is used under cold start conditions to aid engine and transmission warm up. On the TorqShift, once the Tow/Haul mode is activated it can help increase a driver's control when towing large loads up and down steep grades and automatically minimizes shifts and maximizes available torque. Upon descent, the Tow/Haul mode utilizes engine braking to help extend brake life and improve driver control. An adaptive shift function monitors the TorqShift's performance over its lifetime, and adjusts shift pressures in real time to assure consistent shift feel and compensate for wear. For ease of maintenance, the TorqShift's oil filter is a spin-off style, mounted on the passenger-side exterior of the transmission. Also the TorqShift's larger fluid lines and a larger transmission oil cooler help to assure cooler operating temperatures, even under the most demanding conditions. This was Ford's first automatic transmission to feature PTO. The transmission can be equipped with an integrated PTO provision (which automatically locks the torque converter providing power to the PTO gear when the operator turns on the PTO switch).[9]

    Transfer case and 4x4[edit]

On 4x4 models there is a choice of a manual chain-driven transfer case floor shifter with manual front locking hubs or Electronic-Shift-On-the-Fly (ESOF, a $185 option over the manual) dash knob with vacuum activated automatic and (in case of failure) manual override front hubs. The optional FX4 models are basically a standard 4x4 with an Off Road package that includes a few extras like upgraded heavy duty Rancho shocks, limited-slip rear differential, added skid plates for the fuel tank and transfer case, and two "FX4" decals on both back bed-sides instead of the standard "4x4". For all 4x4 models, the 2-speed transfer case 4x4-LOW range has a gear reduction of 2.72:1.

The front suspension on four-wheel drive F-250 and F-350s are equipped with solid front (monobeam) Dana 50 and Dana 60 axles. Prior to 2004, a Dana 60 was used on F-450 and F-550s; 2005–2007 models use a Dana Super 60. Leaf springs eventually got switched to coils for the 2005 model year and the front sway bar was relocated to a frame mounting location, instead of being part of the front axle's unsprung weight. The front suspension on two-wheel drive trucks is independent twin I-beam with coil springs on the F-250 and F-350 pickups, while a solid axle is used on F-350, F-450 and F-550 cab chassis trucks. The manual locking hubs on Super Duty trucks are made by Warn.[10]

The rear suspension on all F-250 and F-350 SRW (single rear wheel) models use a 10.5-inch (270 mm) Sterling 10.5 axle 35-spline axle with choices of conventional or limited-slip differentials in 3.73, 4.10, and 4.30:1 ratios. The Sterling axle was upgraded for the Super Duty trucks. The ring gear was increased from the 10.25 inches to 10.50 and the carrier was upgraded with three pinions instead of two. Disc brakes were made standard. F-350 DRW models use a Dana 80. All models have heavy duty 3" wide leaf springs and staggered shock absorbers. A standard stabilizer bar is included on DRW (Dually) models. An optional slide-in camper certification package with heavier springs and an optional stabilizer bar package are available on SRW models. The rear suspension on F-450 trucks used Dana 80 axles while F-550 models used a Dana 135 until 2005 models. 2005–2007 models use a Dana S 110 axle.

    F-250 solid axle[edit]

The Dana 50 axle featured on most F-250 Super Dutys differs greatly from the early models. The Dana 50 started out as a Twin Traction Beam axle (much like independent suspension) in 1980. This lasted all the way to 1997 models. The Super Duty models then used a solid axle version of this axle. The ring, pinion, carrier and u joints all remained the same however. The Dana 50 was phased out of the trucks in 2004, in favor of the Dana 60 and was last used in the Ford Excursion.

The Super Duty line was restyled for 2005, with the exterior and interior receiving minor updates. The dashboard, gauges, headlights and badges were all updated, and a new, taller front grille, a revised interior and a standard locking tailgate were also added. Significant changes were also made to both the drivetrain and available options.

Major changes over the previous generation of Super Duty trucks include increased payload (GVWR) and towing (GCWR) capacities.

10-17% thicker partially boxed frame, alternator with a higher current capacity. Larger 4-wheel disc brakes (13.66-in front and 13.39 in (340 mm) rear rotors) with new two-piston calipers. Coil spring front axle for improved turning radius. An optional built-into-dash Ford TowCommand TBC (Trailer Brake Controller) that is fully integrated with the truck's PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) Optional dashboard-integrated auxiliary "upfitter" switches (for adding off road lights, winches, snow plows, etc.) Optional drivers side glove compartment. 17 inch wheels are now standard instead of 16 inch wheels (due to the bigger brakes). Forged Alcoa wheels are still an option as well. 18 inch wheels are also an option on single rear wheel trucks. 4x4 outer axle shafts got bumped up in size, standard 30 spline axles are gone in favor of 35 spline shafts. Revised engines. The two previous gas engines were upgraded from 2-valve-per-cylinder to 3-valve (2 intake and 1 exhaust) per cylinder designs. The standard 5.4 L V8 produces 300 horsepower (220 kW) and 365 foot-pounds force (495 N·m) of torque, and the optional 6.8 L V10 produces 362 hp (270 kW) and 457 ft·lbf (620 N·m).

Fuel tank capacities are 38 U.S. gallons in the 8' long bed models, and 29 U.S. gallons in the 6.75' short bed models. Depending on models the optional trailer tow hitch receiver comes with a 2" or 2.5" Class V receiver and 4- and/or 7-pin wiring harness in either 12,500 or 15,000 lb (6,800 kg). All Super Duties include factory installed external oil and transmission coolers.

    Fail-Safe Cooling System[edit]

Ford's "Fail-Safe Cooling System" is designed to protect the engine due to loss of coolant. If the engine overheats, it will automatically switch from 8/10-cylinder (depending on V8 or V10 engine) operation to alternating 4/5-cylinder (depending on V8 or V10 engine) operation. Because there is now 50% less hot combustion, the engine will operate cooler. The vehicle will continue to operate, but with very limited engine power. The now so-called 'dead' cylinders also act like an air pump to cool the engine down even more. This system allows the driver to travel a short distance to obtain service or to reach a repair facility. The distance that can be traveled depends upon vehicle load, outside temperature, and current road conditions.

    F-450/F-550[edit]

To bridge the gap between the pickup line and the much larger medium-duty F-650/F-750, Ford introduced the F-450 and F-550 variants of the Super Duty; with an available GVWR from 17,950-19,500 lbs, it pushes the Super Duty into the Class 5 truck market. Available only as a chassis cab for commercial upfitters, both versions were fitted with dual rear wheels.

While largely aimed at fleet buyers, F-450 and F-550 were configurable in XL, XLT, and Lariat trim levels available to Super Duty pickup buyers. The sole gasoline engine was the 6.8L V10 while the 7.3L PowerStroke was the diesel option; in 2003, this was replaced by the 6.0L PowerStroke.

In 2005, the F-450 and F-550 received further updates to the exterior than the rest of the Super Duty line, with an extended front bumper and front fenders; the F-550 received a "wide-track" front axle to sharpen its turning radius.

The second-generation Super Duty was to debut for model year 2007, but quality issues pushed it forward to the 2008 model year. It features an all-new 6.4 L, 390.5 cu in Power Stroke Diesel V8 with piezo fuel injectors and sequential turbos to replace the problematic 6.0 L Power Stroke single-turbo Diesel V8. The new engine produces 350 hp (260 kW) and 650 ft·lbf (880 N·m) of torque.[13] The vehicle had its first official showing at the Texas State Fair in 2006.

Located near the same dash area as the last generation (but slightly to the right and more directly below the radio), this generation of Super Duty has the same Ford TowCommand TBC (Trailer Brake Controller) and 4 AUX Upfitter switches as the last generation set-up.

There is an optional concealed slide-out step and swing-up hand grab bar in the rear tailgate for easy access.

Ford introduces its all new optional "Rapid-Heat Supplemental Cab Heater," only available on Super Duty trucks with the Diesel engine and TorqShift automatic transmission. In the winter, it quickly raises the cabin temperature to a comfortable level until the engine is warm enough to handle the job.

    Trim[edit]

This 2nd generation of Super Duty includes the F-250 Super Duty (starting at $22,380), F-350 Super Duty (starting at $24,025), and the all new F-450 Super Duty (starting at $39,205). The F-250 and F-350 Super Duty basically has the same payload and towing specs as the last generation.

The model lineup for the 2010 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty is the XL (starting at $25,300), XLT (starting at $28,845), Lariat (starting at $36,420), Cabela's (starting at $42,655), King Ranch (starting at $42,955), and Harley-Davidson (starting at $56,925).

The FX4 model, which was once just an optional Off Road 4x4 package that could be added to any model in the lineup, is replaced by the 4x4 Off Road Package. The FX4 became a model of its own. It still had the same specs as the previous generation but with more of a sporty trim package. The FX4 model has been discontinued for the 2010 model year and has been reverted to an optional Off Road 4X4 package.

    Powertrain[edit]

The same 2 gas engines are carried over and rated exactly the same from the 2nd generation. The 3-valve 5,408 cc (5.408 L; 330.0 cu in) V8 SOHC is standard. The 3-valve 6,802 cc (6.802 L; 415.1 cu in) V10 SOHC was still a $699 option over the 5.4L V8.[14] The 4-valve Navistar 6.4 L (6400 cc, 390.5 cu in) V8 OHV Power Stroke diesel engine was the diesel engine option and was a $6,895 option over the 5,408 cc (5.408 L; 330.0 cu in) V8.

Some unique points to highlight of the 2008, 2009 & 2010 F-450 with a regular production pickup bed, which was only offered as a chassis cab before. It has 2 available axle ratios of 4.30 and 4.88:1. The F-450 Super Duty with the optional 'High Capacity Trailer Tow Package' increases the GCWR from 26,000 to 33,000 lb (15,000 kg). Maximum payload is 6,120 lb (2,780 kg). Maximum towing is 24,500 lb (11,100 kg) (4.88 axle ratio) / 20,500 lb (9,300 kg) (4.30 axle ratio). It comes standard with Crew Cab, 8-foot (2.4 m) long bed, DRW (Dual Rear Wheels), Limited Slip rear axle, 10-lug 19.5-inch (500 mm) Forged wheels made by Alcoa, Trailer Tow package, and the TowCommand TBC (Trailer Brake Controller). The only engine offered in the F-450 Super Duty is the 6.4 L V8 Power Stroke Sequential turbo diesel. The F-450 is equipped with a standard 6-speed manual or optional 5-speed TorqShift automatic transmission.

The Super Duty line received a large exterior upgrade that includes a new, bigger front fascia. Its engines were also upgraded to better compete with the new Silverado HD and Ram HD. Ford stated in the 2011 Chicago Auto Show that the 2011 trucks have the thickest gauge steel frame of any Heavy Duty truck. The 2011 Ford F-Series Super Duty was awarded Truckin's "Topline Pulling Power" award for 2011. It also won Popular Mechanics best workhorse of 2011, and the best "Gear of the Year" in the trucks category. The F-450 is able to tow 24,400 pounds (11,100 kg) and has a maximum payload of 4,920 pounds (2,230 kg). The F350 has a maximum 21,600 pounds (9,800 kg) of towing capacity and 7,110 pounds (3,230 kg) of payload.[17] Each engine is mated to a 6R140 heavy-duty TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission.[18] The Ford F-250, the F-350 and the F-450 all come with trim levels including the XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum.[19]

The 3rd generation of the Ford Super Duty Trucks are assembled at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant, with additional production for other countries in Venezuela and Mexico. In Venezuela the F-350 super duty is offered as a commercial use small truck cutaway featuring a 6.2L V8 gas engine with a 5-speed manual tremec transmission TR-4050 with a choice of 4x2 or 4x4 wheel drive. Since 2012 due to government regulations, the Venezuelan F-350 Super Duty is factory equipped to use both natural gas and gasoline. The F-250 super duty was also recently re-introduced in this market after ten years. It is being marketed using the same engine as the Venezuelan F-350, but only with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 4x2 or 4x4 wheel drive option in both single and double cab configurations.

A feature unique to the 2011 Super Duty is the addition of a locking differential. It is only available for the F-250 and SRW F-350 4x4 models with a rear Sterling 10.5 axle. It is a 390.00 USD option[20] The diesel F-250 relies on vacuum-boost brakes, while the F-350 relies on Hydro-boost. Both gas versions of the F-250 and SRW F-350 use vacuum-boost. F-250 is a class 2 truck. While the F-350 SRW, F-350 DRW, & F-450 pickup are class 3. The F-250 and F-350 (SRW & DRW) have 13.66 inch front brakes and 13.39 inch rear brakes. The F-450 pickup has 14.53 inch front brakes and 15.35 inch rear brakes. The F-450 has a wider track than the F-350. The F-450 remains available in class 4 as a Chassis Cab truck.

    Powertrain[edit] Engines[edit]

The 2011 Ford Super Duty is available with either a gas or diesel engine. The gas option is an E85-capable 6.2 L 2-valve SOHC V8, which puts out 385 horsepower (287 kW) and 405 pound-feet (549 N·m) of torque. The diesel is the new 6.7 L Power Stroke V8, producing 390 hp (291 kW) and 735 lb·ft (997 N·m) of torque.[21] The new engine is an entirely Ford product, unlike previous diesels, therefore reducing development costs and shipping delays. The 6.8-liter V10 was dropped from the regular Super Duty models, however it is still an option with the F-450 and F-550 chassis cabs, mated with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Shortly after the unveiling of the 6.7 L Power Stroke V8, GM unveiled the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 3500HD with Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V8, making 397 hp (296 kW) and 765 lb·ft (1,037 N·m) of torque. Ford quickly responded by boosting the output of the Power Stroke just months after its initial release, to 400 horsepower (298 kW) and 800 lb·ft (1,100 N·m) of torque. For customers who purchased a Super Duty with the original Power Stroke V8, Ford offered a free upgrade at dealerships to the new level of output.[22] Power and torque was increased to 440 horsepower (328 kW) and 860 lb·ft (1,170 N·m) of torque on 2015 models.

Variants[edit] Medium-duty trucks (F-650 and F-750)[edit] 2005-2015 Ford F750 Super Duty crew cab in use as a railroad maintenance truck

In 2000, Ford returned to the Class 6-7 truck market as it expanded the Super Duty line into the medium-duty segment. Developed in a joint venture with Navistar International, the F-650 and F-750 Super Duty were assembled in Mexico. While the chassis and other components would be common to both manufacturers, Ford and International would each source their own bodywork and powertrain; the cab for the Ford trucks would be common with other Super Duty models.

For the 2016 model year, the medium-duty truck range was given a major upgrade, following the end of the joint venture and the shift of the production to the United States. In place of outsourced engines and transmissions, the 2016 F-650 and F-750 now use a 6.8L gasoline V10, a 6.7L PowerStroke diesel V8, and a 6-speed automatic transmission supplied by Ford.

    Sport-utility vehicles[edit]

From 2000 to 2005, the F-250 Super Duty served as a basis for the Ford Excursion sport-utility vehicle. Along with Chevrolet Suburban (and its variants) and the International Harvester Travelall, the Excursion is the longest non-limousine sport-utility vehicle ever sold.

Due to high fuel costs, Brazilian versions featured smaller engines and only coupled to 5-speed manual transmissions (Mazda for the gasoline-powered and Eaton for the Diesel versions of the F-250 and ZF for both the F-350 and F-550). The 4.2L Essex V6 was short-lived, available until late 2001 and in the F-250 only. Diesel options were the 3.9L Cummins B-series, rated at 141 hp for the F-250 until 2001 and for the F-350 (including the dual rear wheel versions rebadged locally as F-4000) until late 2004 when it was detuned to 120 hp to meet local emissions regulations. In 1999 the 180 hp MWM-International 4.2L Sprint 6.07 TCA was introduced as an option for the F-250, being dropped only in 2005 in favor of a 203 hp version of the Cummins B-Series fitted with electronic common-rail injection, while the F-350 and F-550 remained with a Bosch P-Type mechanical injection pump due to concerns regarding easy maintenance and lower cost. 4x4 remained an export-only option until 2005, and automatic transmissions were featured only in Australian-market units, as a standard with the 5.4L Triton and optional with the 7.3L PowerStroke. The MWM-International engine was never available with automatic transmission, but 4x4 was available for export to Australia and Africa. In September 2014, the F-350/F-4000 was reintroduced in Brazil, powered by a Cummins ISF2.8 engine coupled to an Eaton 5-speed manual transmission, available only in chassis-cab, with 4x4 available only for the DRW F-4000.

As of 2014, the Ford Super Duty is sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela (F-250 and F-350) Brazil (F-350/F-4000), Argentina (F-4000 only), Angola (F-250 and F-350), Cambodia, the Middle East, and Iceland (F-350 only) in LHD only. In Australia, where it was officially imported in RHD from Brazil until 2005, newer American-built units can be imported but must be converted locally to RHD.

    What's New for 2015

The optional 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 engine in the 2015 Ford F-250 has been revised, resulting in improved horsepower, torque, fuel economy and towing capacity with the conventional trailer setup and with the fifth-wheel gooseneck.

    Introduction

At some point, even full-size pickup trucks run out of power, and that's where heavy-duty trucks come in to save the day. If you've got way more than the average amount of cargo to haul around or something serious to tow, a heavy-duty pickup like the 2015 Ford F-350 might be right for you.

The 2015 Ford F-350 is designed with maximum capability in mind, and this year Ford has made significant revisions to the optional turbocharged diesel engine. If the standard power from the 6.2-liter gasoline-powered V8 isn't enough, the optional 6.7-liter turbocharged diesel engine now has 440 horsepower and 860 pound-feet of torque (up from 400 and 800, respectfully). Properly equipped, the turbodiesel F-350 can now tow a massive 26,500 pounds, and according to Ford, returns better fuel economy.

So there's more power and the promise of higher mpg, but lately we've come to expect a bit more out of heavy-duty pickup trucks. Many of these dedicated workhorses are now surprisingly comfortable and have long lists of luxury options, and although it's getting on in years, this big Ford is no exception. Base trim levels of the F-350 are pretty sparse, but cabin surfaces and interior touches are luxurious on upper trim levels. Features like the optional MyFord Touch infotainment system and its large 8-inch dash-mounted display prove you don't have to give up modern conveniences for old-fashioned truck capability. Those luxury extras do add up quickly, though, so be ready to open up your wallet if you want the finest leather and wood trim.

Despite its strengths, the 2015 Ford F-350 does have some serious competition from the usual suspects. The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD was redesigned this year and is definitely worth a look. The 2015 Ram 3500 is also an extremely capable heavy-duty pickup that deserves attention. The Ram has a more composed ride and a higher-quality cabin to go with its massive towing capacity, making it our top pick in this segment.

And of course there's always the F-350's little brother, the 2015 Ford F-250, which is only marginally less capable, as well as the mighty 2015 Ford F-450. It's the only heavy-duty truck of its kind, so if you need the most towing capacity this side of a big rig, it's your best bet. When all is said and done, though, the Ford F-350 Super Duty is a stout truck that's definitely worth a test-drive.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty is available in three cab designs: two-door regular cab, extended cab (SuperCab) and four-door crew cab. There are two rear axle designs (single wheel and dual) and two bed lengths (8 feet and 6.8 feet). Note that the short bed is unavailable with the regular cab and the dual-wheel rear axle. There are five trim levels: base XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum; but not all are available with every cab, bed and axle configuration.

The XL comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, a black grille and bumpers, black door handles, running boards (dual rear axle), manual-telescoping trailer tow mirrors, a locking tailgate, air-conditioning, vinyl floor coverings and upholstery, a 40/20/40-split front bench seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a two-speaker sound system with an AM/FM radio.

The XLT adds 18-inch cast-aluminum wheels, a chrome grille and bumpers, heated outside mirrors with an integrated blind-spot mirror, rear privacy glass (SuperCab and crew cab), cruise control, full power accessories, keyless entry, an integrated trailer brake controller, padded door armrests, a middle front seat that converts into a center console, a carpeted floor, cloth upholstery, the Ford Sync voice command system, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, lockable storage with a power point under the rear seat and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and a USB/iPod interface.

Further up the ladder, the Lariat trim comes with foglights, power telescoping and folding mirrors, body-color door handles, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights, a power-sliding rear window with defrost, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, eight-way power-adjustable front seats (with power lumbar adjustment), power-adjustable pedals, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 4.2-inch color trip computer, wood-tone interior trim, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, the MyFord Touch infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, upgraded Sync functionality, a rearview camera and an eight-speaker audio system. In crew cab configuration, the Lariat gets a premium Sony audio system.

The two upper trims include many of the Lariat's optional items and bolsters them with special design elements. As such, the King Ranch adds two-tone paint, a body-color grille with chrome insert, unique trim and color schemes, special leather upholstery, remote start, a navigation system, heated and ventilated front bucket seats with a fixed center console and driver memory settings, and the Sony audio system.

The top-of-the-line Platinum is equipped similarly to the King Ranch but features a significantly different design aesthetic inside and out, while adding 20-inch polished alloy wheels, tailgate assist step, unique wood-tone interior trim, upgraded leather upholstery and a heated steering wheel.

Many of the features that are standard on upper trim levels such as navigation and the tailgate assist step are available as options on lower trims. Other options (depending on trim level) include different axle ratios, a stowable bed extender, a transmission power take-off (for powering accessories like snow plows), heavy-duty alternators, fifth-wheel/gooseneck mounting points, roof clearance lights, drop-in or spray-in bedliners, a sunroof and integrated accessory switches.

The available Ford Work Solutions package adds an in-dash computer that's customizable to suit commercial users and fleets. Also available is the FX4 Off-Road package (4WD models only), which includes an electronic locking rear differential, all-terrain tires, hill descent control, skid plates and Rancho shock absorbers.

    Powertrains and Performance

All 2015 Ford F-350 models employ a six-speed automatic transmission and offer a choice between rear- and four-wheel drive, as well as single- (SRW) and dual-rear-wheel (DRW) configurations. The base engine is a 6.2-liter gasoline V8 that produces 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque. Maximum towing capacity from the trailer hitch is 12,500 pounds (SRW) and 16,100 pounds (DRW), while adding a fifth-wheel hookup changes that limit to 15,900 (SRW) and 16,000 pounds (DRW).

Optional is a turbocharged 6.7-liter diesel V8 engine that produces 440 hp and 860 lb-ft of torque. Maximum towing capacity from the trailer hitch is 14,000 pounds (SRW) and 19,000 pounds (DRW). The fifth-wheel setup boosts the max up to 16,800 (SRW) and 26,700 (DRW).

    Safety

The 2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty comes standard with four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, trailer sway control, hill start assist, side curtain airbags and the SOS post-crash alert system.

An integrated trailer brake controller is standard on XLT and higher models, while the Lariat trim level adds rear parking sensors and power-adjustable pedals. A rearview camera is optional on the XLT and standard on the Lariat and above.

In Edmunds testing, an F-350 Platinum 4x4 with the 6.7-liter diesel engine came to a stop from 60 mph in 138 feet. This is a typical performance for a 1-ton truck.

    Interior Design and Special Features

Heavy-duty trucks haven't historically been known for their luxurious cabins, but that has changed in recent years, and the F-350 has fallen a bit behind. One look at the Ram 3500's comparatively lavish new interior will convince you that Ford's got a little room for improvement. The F-350 has a lot of hard plastics on lower trim levels, and for better or for worse, the overall look screams "work truck." But to be fair, the Lariat creates a distinctly upscale vibe with leather and the MyFord Touch interface, while the King Ranch and Platinum models are fancier still.

There's no shortage of storage in the Ford F-350. There's a lockable bin under the middle of the available 40/20/40-split front bench seat, and the middle seatback folds down to serve as an armrest. Another lockable bin for longer items lives under the rear seats and includes a 12-volt power point. An optional, alternate front bench design features a middle seat section that can be configured to swallow a laptop and even hanging files or other business-related items; it also provides a 12-volt power point of its own, along with a 110-volt inverter.

Standard from the Lariat on up is a large multifunction display in the instrument cluster that allows the driver to customize settings, and relays trip computer, fuel economy, towing and off-road information. Lariat and higher trims also get the MyFord Touch infotainment system, which includes two USB ports, an SD card slot and an 8-inch touchscreen that controls phone, climate control, entertainment and navigation features. Note that this version of MyFord Touch incorporates large physical buttons for the climate and audio controls that allow them to be operated by those wearing work gloves.

    Driving Impressions

There's no doubt that behind the wheel, the F-350 is impressive. It feels quick and capable, while the ride is quiet and supple by segment standards. Bumps can temporarily ruffle the F-350's composure, though, especially with an empty bed. The biggest flaw in the F-350's formula is its steering, which feels slow and vague. Chevy and Ram deliver a more confidence-inspiring feel through the wheel. We haven't had the chance to test the new diesel engine yet, but past versions felt smooth and capable while towing heavy loads.

  • 2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty Diesel V-8 First Drive – Review ...

Ten-percent more power and a solid whump of additional torque from the Power Stroke diesel mean it’s Ford’s turn to leapfrog its truckmaking competitors to claim best-in-class honors for 2015. Although the blue-oval team is making more significant pickup-truck news with its aluminum-intensive F-150, in this case we’re talking heavy-duty or, in Ford parlance, Super Duty light trucks, the F-250, F-350, and F-450.

We climbed into a pair of the revised 2015 F-350 models for brief drives. Both were four-by-fours wearing the King Ranch badges that denote luxurious trimmings, and both were in crew-cab, short-bed spec. One was a dual-rear-wheel version wearing that edition’s standard 17-inch wheels shod with Bridgestone tires; the other truck had a single wheel on either end of the rear axle and the optional 20-inch chrome wheels and Michelin light-truck tires. Both were equipped with the Power Stroke diesel V-8 and TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission. Prominent badges reminded us that the rigs would happily burn B20 biodiesel if given the chance.

With only brief exposure, our impressions were that this year’s more-powerful engine seems remarkably quiet—not as clattery or ever present as the Cummins diesel-powered HD Ram we drove earlier this year—and that the dualie was, surprisingly, easier to maneuver and rode better than the single-wheel version. A Ford engineer who was riding shotgun told us the single-wheel model was equipped with an uprated towing package and that its big wheels and different rear-axle-and-spring setup affected the ride and steering feel.

On the Heavier Side of Light Duty

Each truck’s bed was burdened with more than 1000 pounds of weights, so it wasn’t really possible to do a seat-of-the-pants estimation of acceleration, but given the curb weights, power ratings, and previous experience, we expect these rigs to get to merging velocity with plenty of room to spare on a highway ramp. Unladen, 0-to-60-mph times should be about eight seconds. Although they’re called one-ton trucks, that’s not much of a load by modern standards. Ford says these Power Stroke F-350s, depending on equipment and trim, can be rated to tow up to 26,700 pounds (or as little as 12,500). The gross combined weight rating can range up to 35,000 pounds. Mind you, these are meant for farm and work-site use, although the distinctions between personal-use and commercial vehicles are blurring. Marketing nomenclature notwithstanding, these pickups are really classed with their half-ton stablemates as light-duty trucks rather than with true medium- or heavy-truck segments where commercial-grade haulers fit.

Ford isn’t helping to maintain this distinction, however, boasting that this second-generation Power Stroke diesel is essentially an engine so strong that it’s all but identical to the one used in the medium-duty F-450. (Ram made similar claims on behalf of its Cummins-built six last year.)

    More Squeeze Makes More Juice

The Power Stroke now uses a larger turbocharger and redesigned fuel-injector nozzles to make bigger bangs in each of the 6.7-liter engine’s eight cylinders, adding up to a rating of 440 horsepower (up from 400) and 860 lb-ft of torque (versus 800 last year). That neatly tops the figures Ram used to claim the title as the hardest puncher with its Cummins diesels last year (385 and 850)—and by an even wider margin over the torque rating GM claims for the Duramax diesels in the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra HD models.

With a firm eye on its cross-town rivals, Ford placed a pushbutton on the dash to actuate the exhaust brake. Like those at Ram and GM, the exhaust brake generates back pressure through the turbo to create drag. Ford claims that besides the easy one-touch actuation, this year’s version works more effectively.

Dearborn boasts that it upgraded the interior trim on the King Ranch models for 2015. It looks a bit better but to our eye didn’t match the quality of materials in the Ram and Chevy trucks we’ve sampled recently. The leather, now wearing the King Ranch’s “snake” brand more prominently, looked good, but there was less of it, and sometimes it was used in odd places. Cheap-looking plastic bits (notably pockets on the console and inner door panel) felt flimsy. On the one hand, F-350s in King Ranch trim can run $55,000 to $70,000 or so, and chintzy trim might be off-putting. Still, customers in this segment are always asking for more capability, Ford claims, so perhaps they’ll be willing to overlook such factors in favor of boasting the biggest power numbers.
