As a result, the market share of commercial vehicles improved 1. 7 percentage points to 12. 3% year to date. The market share of commercial vehicles year to date emerged as the best in nearly 20 years. Sales of most of Ford’s products were strong. (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety via AP) DETROIT (AP) — Ford’s new aluminum-sided F-150 pickup saw mixed results in new crash tests by the insurance industry, and the damaged trucks cost more to repair than steel-bodied ones. The four-door Super Crew version of the 2015 F-150 got top ratings in all five of the crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. But the Super Cab version, which has a smaller rear door and back seat, did poorly in a small front overlap test, which slams 25 percent of the front of the truck into a barrier at 40 miles per hour. The Insurance Institute also said it took longer for a local Ford dealer to repair the aluminum truck than an older steel one, and the aluminum parts cost more. Ford said the Super Crew — which got the top safety award — accounts for 83 percent of all F-150 sales. The Super Cab makes up around 12 percent and the Regular Cab accounts for 5 percent. Ford F-150 Gets New Sport Mode Derived From Mustang Tech - Motor Authority

The Raptor is the F-150 to get if you enjoy performance driving as much as hauling stuff around, but even the standard F-150 comes with a few performance-oriented features thanks to technology sharing with the Ford Motor Company’s [NYSE:F]... Now, Ford has revealed that its popular workhorse also gets a driver-selectable Sport mode—technology that has also been borrowed from the Mustang. ALSO SEE: Ford Says Shelby GT350R Lap Times Match 911 GT3, Beat Camaro Z/28. The Sport mode affects the programming of the standard six-speed automatic transmission and is activated by pushing the Tow/Haul mode button twice. The Sport mode causes the transmission to hold gears for longer, keeping the engine in its ideal power and torque range for longer. Ford says activating the Sport mode makes the truck feel more responsive and quicker in acceleration. The Sport mode is similar to the F-150’s Tow/Haul mode, which also changes shift points under acceleration, keeping the truck at a higher rpm and further up in the power range for improved towing. In this case, the technology limits the transmission from shifting up when the vehicle crests a hill, and provides downhill brake support that allows engine-compression braking to slow the vehicle and maintain a steady speed.
