Ford said on Tuesday that it sold more than 234,000 cars, trucks and SUVs in August -- a 5% jump from a year ago. That's the best August sales for Ford in nine years. Though, Ford did shift some truck production from Mexico to Ohio last month. On a day when all stock indexes were deep in the red, Ford stock was up for most of the morning before slipping into the red in the afternoon. GM's sales fell slightly in August and its stock tumbled more than 2. 5%. Toyota also reported a drop in U. S. sales. So what drove (sorry) Ford's success in August. Sales of Ford's F-series of trucks, which includes the megapopular F-150, were up 5% in August. Ford had struggled to get enough inventory to dealers earlier this year. During a conference call Tuesday morning, Ford's vice president of U. S. marketing and sales Mark LaNeve said that F-150 inventory levels were much better now than in May and June but were "still not at optimal levels. Ford Motor Co. has said it plans to focus on filling fleet orders for its popular F-150 pickup through the remainder of the year, and on Tuesday the automaker said Time Warner Cable has placed an order for 540. It’s among the top 10 biggest... F-Series sales rose 4. 7 percent in August as the pickups topped the 70,000 sales mark for the first time this year. The automaker said it has about 90,000 F-150s in its inventory — a large drop from the 173,000 it had at this time last year, but about 3,000 more than two months ago. we’re filling our dealer lots and will begin filling more commercial fleet orders,” Mark LaNeve, Ford’s head of marketing, sales and service, said in a Tuesday conference call with reporters and analysts. Of the 71,000 F-Series sales in August, about 80 percent were to retail customers and 20 percent were to fleets. As inventory levels rise, Ford has increased its incentives. You don't need a $60,000 truck, but you might just want one. That's how I felt driving the 2016 Ford F-150 Limited, the most luxurious pickup truck Ford will sell you. Yes, this pickup truck has massage seats, ladies and gentleman. It's a cliche to say "this isn't your dad's pickup," but in this case, it couldn't be more true. Ford kindly brought a 2016 F-150 Limited to Mashable HQ in Manhattan for an early hands-on demo, and I came to grips with this beast in rush hour traffic. Before pulling out onto the street, I was a little intimidated by the F-150: I've driven trucks before, and I've driven in Manhattan plenty, but the F-150 isn't exactly small. Did I mention that this is the smallest pickup truck Ford sells in the U. S. I had no reason to be afraid though, since the F-150 was a piece of cake in the city. Between the massage seats, 360-degree cameras, auto parking and blind-spot monitoring, the truck was — dare I say it — relaxing to drive through gnarly rush hour traffic. On some level, the F-150 Limited is as much a competitor to other tricked-out pickups as it is to european luxury SUVs. Source: mashable.com
