Fiat expects a lot from the 2016 500X SUV, but the automaker needs to sort out a rough-shifting automatic transmission and perhaps add more Italian flair to distinguish it in the growing pack of subcompact crossovers. Fiat builds the new 500X alongside the popular Jeep Renegade in Melfi, Italy. As Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said when asked to sum up the differences between the two little SUVs, the 500X won’t follow the Renegade up a hill. Other than styling that’s reminiscent of the Fiat 500 and 500L — perhaps too much like the slow-selling 500L — the features and prices of the 500X don’t do much to distinguish it from the competition. Prices for the Fiat 500X start at $20,000 for a front-wheel-drive Pop model with a 160-hp, 1. 4L turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission. A nine-speed automatic transmission adds $1,500. All-wheel-drive models start at $24,200 for a 500X Easy. Fiat’s trim levels for the 500X are, in ascending order: Pop, Easy, Trekking, Lounge and Trekking Plus. I tested a front-drive 500X Trekking with the 2. 4L engine, automatic transmission, voice recognition, Bluetooth phone and audio compatibility, blind-spot alert, backup camera, push-button start, heated front seats, heated steering wheel and more. A pair of Democrats is pressuring automaker Fiat Chrysler to support a bill that would ban car rental companies from distributing recalled vehicles. Fiat Chrysler was recently fined $105 million by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for allegedly failing to properly notify drivers, car dealerships and federal regulators about recalls that affected about 11 million... ) said Wednesday that Fiat Chrysler should also publicly back their proposed legislation to ban recalled rentals after agreeing to a settlement with regulators that included the terms of the fine. "While it would not solve the many serious recall issues Fiat Chrysler is facing, it would at least provide assurance that your large fleet of rental vehicles are safe for consumers to drive," the lawmakers continued. "In addition, considering that your company has more than 20 active recalls affecting over 11 million vehicles, one would think you would want to do everything you can to prevent consumers from operating these vehicles. Fiat Chrysler is the latest in a series of car companies and auto part manufacturers that have been hit with heavy fines by the Obama administration. The proposed bill, known as the Raechel and Jacqueline Houck Safe Rental Car Act, bars the rental or sale of cars that are “subject to a safety recall” and authorizes. Source: thehill.com

Fiat Chrysler-GM Tie-Up Is Sergio Marchionne's Impossible Dream - TheStreet.com

It has been more than three months since Marchionne first publicly proposed a combination of Fiat and General Motors, a suggestion that was quickly rebuked by GM CEO Mary Barra and her board. Marchionne has so far refused to take no for an answer, continuously pitching the merits of a deal to Barra, analysts and large-scale investors despite those pitches largely falling on deaf ears. The exec touts his finance background and his success rescuing Fiat from near failure and engineering a relatively successful merger between Fiat and Chrysler, arguing that he is uniquely positioned to navigate a GM-Fiat-Chrysler combination... General Motors partisans counter that Fiat, with its $8 billion debt load, weak position in certain parts of the globe and other issues, is more vulnerable to a potential downturn than GM is and therefore needs a deal more than their company ever... Well, both arguments actually make sense, which explains why Marchionne can continue to credibly pound the table about the benefits of a deal without having much luck with GM.
