For those who have seen the 2015 Silverado/Sierra HD trucks since they were unveiled at the State Fair of Texas last year but didn't eye the specs, it might come as some surprise that the engines and transmissions haven't changed. Even though both trucks now have very different styling than in the GMT900 era, the 3/4- and 1-ton pickups are powered by a choice of a 360-hp, 6. 0-liter gas V-8 paired to a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic, or a 397-hp, 6. 6-liter Duramax... As Jeff Luke, executive chief engineer on the trucks explained, the HD models were all-new under the skin for 2011. At that time, the trucks received fully boxed frames using high-strength steel, and those frames share next to nothing with the... That's why the trucks are no longer part of the GMT900 family -- they are now aligned with the new 1/2-ton Silverado and Sierra. At a media drive event in Arizona, Chevrolet and GMC weren't worried about not having the same torque as the rest of the Detroit Three models. As is the case with the smaller trucks, the Chevrolet's styling is more conservative and classic. The new HDs now have many of the features that were first introduced on the ½-tons, such as the CornerSteps on either side of the bumper, the new tie-down system, and the optional EZ Lift-and-Lower.
