Volvo Cars Thailand has introduced a new diesel version of its mid-sized estate model. The V60 D4 is now available with the brand’s 2. 0-litre twin-turbo diesel developing 190hp at 4,250rpm and 400Nm from 1,750-2,500rpm. Safety equipment include active cruise control, automatic braking at city speeds, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitor and warnings for rear traffic when reversing, pedestrians and cyclists. The price has been set at 2. 549 million baht. It’s the C350e, the second car in a 10-vehicle plug-in line-up that Mercedes will unleash on the world between now and 2017. Headlined, perhaps unwisely, by M-B as its Hybrid Offensive, this attack on the plug-in market started with the S Class... It’s mostly targeted at the US, where hybrids not diesels are the preferred fuel-saving engine. The first bit is that, as part of its re-naming of all the models and derivatives, Mercedes has stopped shouting that it’s hybrids are PLUG-IN HYBRIDs and instead just given them an ‘e’ badge. By mating a 2. 0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine to a 60kW electric motor, then adding a list of other refinements that offer a high level of complexity. You don’t so much drive the C350e as pilot it. Apart from the five transmission modes there is also a choice of four operating rules that allow the driver to choose the level of the electric motor’s intervention. The car talks to you via the new haptic feedback throttle pedal. In the same way lane departure warnings buzz the seat and pulse the steering wheel if you get offline, or don’t see a car in your blind spot, the C350e’s pedal gives you feedback on how to save fuel. With the recent announcement that 10 plug-equipped Mercedes models will hit the streets by 2017 , we applaud anything that lessens the sensory shock of that many capital letters. As its name suggests, the C boasts six-cylinder power figures, although Mercedes claims it posts three-cylinder economy numbers. Featuring a four-cylinder engine making 208 horsepower and an electric motor pumping out 80 horses, the C moves out on a bountiful, relaxed wave of 443 lb-ft of total-system torque. In classic M-B fashion, it’s not a riotous explosion of power, but rather a steroidal serenity, bolstered by the latest C-class’s neo-S-class comportment. But in place of a torque converter, the gearbox features the electric motor bolted up to a wet clutch, offering torque-converter smoothness with directly coupled efficiency. In the Mercedes, the shift paddles do something other than regulate regenerative power—we’re looking at you, Cadillac ELR—allowing for honest-to-Fangio back-road shenanigans. A range of four drive modes (Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+) pair with a quartet of electricity-management selections (Hybrid, E-mode, E-save, and Charge, allowing for everything from hillside jaunts with antisocial intent to congestion-zone...
