"In states that use corrosive materials for de-icing, driver's footwear may bring in materials that saturate the vehicle's carpeting, which is in contact with the vehicle's engine Electronic Control Unit," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. The affected vehicles were originally sold in or are currently registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio,... "Since we did not inspect each ECU return from customer vehicles due to any cause, we do not know which ones may have been returned due to this cause," Honda said in documentation filed with NHTSA.
