Quattros will continue to use the near-faultless eight-speed automatic, but the news is even better for front-drive models: Audi has dropped the CVT in favor of an all-new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. And that means the least expensive front-drive models will match the character of the rest of the A6 lineup. Our impression from Audi is that CVTs will be phased out of all but the most fuel-economy-focused models.
